Technology in Nursing Practice

The topic was all about Technology in Nursing Practice where Mr. Braga the speaker presented
the people behind the operations of the IT department team. Theses people are responsible in
handling the system of a specific institution for example the Davao Doctors Hospital, in this hospital
they use this bar code that is imprinted to the wristband of a patient. The purpose of the said bar
code will serve as the account of the patient in terms of medication to prevent medical error. The way
of using this is to scan the wrist band with bar code by using a cellphone with a scanner. As I
remember from the previous return demonstration about oral medication we tackled about EMR or
this electronic medical records where in the medication of a patient is encoded as a digital record. Mr.
Braga mentioned the other systems that are used in different department such as the operating room
portal where nurses can encode the schedules and can be seen by other in charge in the operating
room to confirm the schedules that had been requested. He also explained the transmission of the
information of the patient from a department to another department for example sending result of x-
rays to the nurse station or from the nurse station to laboratory requesting for the lab results. As for
the telehealth that Mr. Braga lectured earlier this way of communication of health care with the
assistance of technology it is convenient and less-cost than physical meet appointment with the
physician but the disadvantage is that we can’t do all the assessment or thorough assessment
because of less interaction with the patient. And as what I have questioned about the privacy is that it
is safe in terms with communicating with the physician by this telehealth. About the question of, is
telehealth can be covered by insurance because maybe if it is covered with insurance that means it
will be more less-cost for the other patients.
