4.2 Impact of a Particle with a Fixed Surface.

If a particle collides normally with a fixed barrier, then it hits it at right-angles

and rebounds in the opposite direction along the line of motion.

Before. After.

Applying Newton’s Law of Restitution gives:

e= speed of separation
speed of approach

= v–0
u–0

 e=v
u

This is e = speed of rebound

speed of approach

Example 7.
A particle is moving horizontally with speed 5 ms-1 when it
strikes a vertical wall normally. It rebounds with a speed of 3 ms -1. Find the
coefficient of restitution between the particle and the wall.

Example 8.
A particle is moving horizontally with speed 3 ms-1 when it
strikes a vertical wall normally. The coefficient of restitution between the
particle and the wall is . Find the speed of rebound.

Before. After.

Example 9.
A small smooth ball falls from rest from a height of 1.35 m
above a smooth horizontal plane. It rebounds to a height of 0.6 m. Find the
coefficient of restitution between the ball and the plane.

Model the ball as an elastic particle. As the ball falls freely, the constant
acceleration equations can be used.
Example 10.
A particle P falls from rest from a height of 4 m above a smooth
plane. The coefficient of restitution between P and the plane is . Find the
total distance travelled by P up to the instant when it hits the plane for the
third time.

Split the motion into 3 parts.
