1. The principal purpose of opening a business is money. Do you think this is also
the main reason for practices of child labor and slavery in the chocolate
industry? Depend on your stand.
- Yes. But in the case of the chocolate industry, they intended to earn more
profit by having the same manpower but spending less for labor. They took
advantage of people's poverty and took child as their laborers instead. It
was stated that cocoa farmers earn less than $2 per day, which is an
income below the poverty line that's why they implied child labor to keep
their prices competitive. Just like any other businesses, all owners intend to
generate income. But the chocolate industry took it way too far and they
were too greedy to the point that they violated human rights just to earn
more money. The children should be sent to schools for education and not
to a factory that only uses them for their own benefits. Money can really
manipulate people especially in the chocolate industry because it was said
that there is an intense poverty surrounding West Africa.
2. What are the ways in which the chocolate industry can help in the socio-
economic development of West Africa? Enumerate them.
- There are literally many ways but they refuses to see them. The number
one priority is for them to free those children they used for their own
factories, sent them in to a good schools for their brighter future.
- The West Africa benefits from the chocolate industry. The industry made
them built their own cocoa farm to produce their own crop. The crop, the
cocoa bean itself, it can supply people's basic need as it can be consumed
as food.
- It can provide employment for unemployed people, they can work in the
farm.
- It is also an industrial raw material which is a great help for the
socioeconomic development of West Africa as their crop is consumed by
large chocolate companies worldwide.
- It can also be a resource of poverty reduction as people can earn money
from selling cocoa beans.
3. As consumers, you and I have essential roles in diminishing the food industry's
injustices. Child slavery on cocoa farms is a serious and worldwide issue, what
will you recommend as part of the solution? Explain
- This inhumane act, or the child labor, slavery and human trafficking,
happening just to produce cocoa won't stop if those large companies won't
stop consuming them. I think it's best to focus on reaching out for those
chocolate companies to stop consuming them and if they can also provide
donations to those who experienced slavery and to rescue those who are still
not freed. But as a person with no such loud voice, I recommend that we
can sign petition to help those who experienced slavery, we can donate
anything to them, of course with the help of charities that are willing to help
and support too. If you think that you cannot do any of those, you can help the
victims by spreading the words to other people. Let other people know their
struggles so that more people would be aware of what we are enjoying eating
today, is something that other people struggled with their life just to produce
them.

Mini Case 1: Child Labor and Slavery in the Chocolate Industry

Case Answers: 1) We think money is also the main reason for the injustices in the
chocolate industry because it was said that there is intense poverty surrounding West
Africa. Children at young ages most likely want to help support their families and they
ended up on cocoa farms because they really need work. Moreover, traffickers tell them
that the job pays well. In other cases, farmers don't make enough to support their
business. Cocoa prices are low, yields are low, and farmers are unable to pay for adult
laborers, thus leaving them with no choice but to use their children as labor. Poverty,
therefore, is the main reason for child labor and poverty practices.

2) The chocolate industry can help the socio-economic development of West Africa by
the following ways: a) It provides better returns for growers and chocolate
manufacturers. b) It gives higher Gross Domestic Product for West Africa in which
cocoa is grown. c) Traditional ways of life are sustained but in a way that fosters better
economic returns for the cocoa farmers, their families, and communities. d) With the
help of the World Cocoa Foundation (WCF), the industry provides better livelihoods at
the farm level, increased resources and investment at the national level, and a safer,
more secure environment for smallholder farmers that supply the bulk of cocoa
production for the world's consumers.

3) Child labor doesn't happen because food industry farmers don't want a bright future
for their kids. More often it's simply a means of survival. Poverty, limited access to
education, and lack of enforcement are main factors that contributes to child labor. To
address such worldwide issue, we, as consumers, recommend the local government
some solutions. First, raise farmers' incomes such that they can earn a sustainable
livelihood, invest in their farms, and hire adult workers. Second, provide communities
with a financial premium that they can invest in things like education. Lastly, ensure
strict standards that prohibit the use of child labor are monitored and enforced.

1.) The principal purpose of opening a business is money. Do you think this is also the
main reason for the practices of child labor and slavery in the chocolate industry?
Defend your answer.
• It is only given that the aim of the chocolate fact is to earn profit, but using a child to
do the labor os clearly wrong. The child should just enjoy his or her early years, play
everyday, learn new things. The children should be sent to schools for education and
not to sent to a factory thag only uses them for their own benefits. Those companies
that uses children for their companies to earn profit should be behind the bars,
receiving their punishment. They trick children to work for them and its disgusting that
these chocolate factories earns a lot. They should be punished.

2.) What are the ways in which the chocolate industry can help in the socio-economic
development of West Africa? Enumerate them.
•There are literally many ways but they refuses to see them. The number one priority is
for them to free those children they used for their own factories, sent them in to a good
schools for their brighter future. They should provide for those kids after they benefited
from that disgusting act they did. They should also sent those children to hospitals and
get them a check up. Helping the families of those children will be good too. Because
we all know they are unfortunate and they need help from those people who are clearly
privileged
3.) As consumers, you and I have essential roles in diminishing the food industry's
injustices. Child slavery on cocoa farms is a serious and worldwide issue, what will you
recommend as part of the solution? Explain. •Customers are not always knew this kind
of practices in a factory happens. They are just probably concerned if the product
factory produces are good or bad. So for me, as a consumer the best way to help is to
know first the background of these companies and do not buy if they have a horrible
background. Examine the product if its legally showed to the public and so on and so
forth.
1. The principal purpose of opening a business is money. Do you think this is also the
main reason for practices of child labor and slavery in the chocolate industry? Defend
your stand.
One of the purpose establishing a business is money. Where the entrepreneur or
businessman can earn more profit. Yes, we think that money is also the main reason
why the chocolate industry practices child labor and slavery. Enable for the Industry to
have high profit by producing more chocolate to supply the demands of the
marketplace, they needed workers who can perform their job effectively and efficiently
even just receiving a low salary. In this situation, the industry used children to work for
them, for most children don't mind the salary they will be receiving, as long as they can
bring something for their family. Also the industry doesn't mind the age of the workers
as long as they have a more workers to help in the farm in producing cocoa. Another
thing is that they can force children to work because children don't have enough
strength to fight, right to complaint instead, they just work for the sake of not being
punished. In some cases, the industry will just give food to them in exchange for their
works. Overall, for the industry to earn money, not only to earn also to be known in the
world for good production they used children to be their workers considering low salary
expenses with high production of chocolates.

2. What are the ways in which the chocolate industry can help in the socioeconomic
development of West Africa? Enumerate them.
West Africa is one of the poorest country in the world. The chocolate industry can help
in the socio economic development of West Africa. The following
 It can create job or employment
 It can help in providing financial income and needs of the family who are working
there.
 Produce goods for selling and exporting to other country.
 Improve the economy of the West Africa where their country is one of the best
and known supplier of chocolates.

3. Child labor has been a predominant problem in many parts of the world and
has been affecting the society because a vast majority of children are being
engaged in illegally dangerous works and are being deprived from the things
that a normal kid should have like education. Despite the fact that years filled
with different government trying to eliminate this issue through laws had
passed, still their efforts weren't enough. As consumers we would like to
recommend to the various government agencies and to the law maker of the
rights of employment all over the world should come hand in hand and unite.
In their authority and power that they acquire, they must give more attention
to this and fully to the implemented proper laws that will prosecute those
people who exploit children and force them to work haphazardly. Then they
should check every industry background of workers and if the workers are
treated properly and they have employees at the right age. Also to avoid
children working they should develop educational system for free that could
help save children from work and find a way to lessen poverty. Also the
government will have a program for the poor family like helping them through
providing their needs or give their parents a job. As a part of the solution and
of this generation. We will also recommend that instead of using social media
as an outlet to trend unnecessary things, why not use this as a platform
where we can participate to address the said issue and let our voices be
heard. After all, this is not only the responsibility of the government but also
the society as a whole.
