• What does the “constrain” mean in the video lecture? Give an

example to explain this term.

• GP4-1: •Draw free body diagrams for the following plot (both the
plank and man). Suppose the painter has mass
m1 and the platform has mass m2. He pulls on
each rope with a force of magnitude F and
accelerates upward with a uniform
acceleration. Find the acceleration.

• GP4-2: The Atwood machine shown below has F
frictionless, pulley (w/ mass m) and massless cords.
A force F (up) applies to the pulley. Determine
(a) the acceleration of each masses and the pulley
(relative to ground). T1
(b) the tensions T1 and T2 in the cords. m
(c) What do your results change if m = 0? T2

• GP4-3: The double Atwood machine in Fig. below has

frictionless, massless pulleys and cords. Assume m1 , m2

• GP 4-4: Two blocks 1 and 2 rest on a frictionless horizontal surface. They
are connected by three massless strings and two frictionless, massless pulleys
as shown below. A force F is applied
to block 1. What is the resulting
acceleration of block 1?

• GP 4-5: A small block of mass m rests on the sloping side of a wedge of mass
M which itself rests on a horizontal table
as shown below. Assuming all surfaces
are frictionless, determine the
acceleration of each block.
