Respected Sir,
Greetings from Kashi
Being Graduate in Ayurveda, modern medicine and surgery from
Gurukul Kangri, Haridwar, Uttarakhand (Annexure no.1) | am
having grave concern towards the recent data shared by National
Family Health Survey (NFHS). The obesity among children has
increased 60 % in last five years. Situation in rural areas is also
alarming. Among adult population also, between age group of 15 to
49 years, obesity is upward trend across all states with around 25 %
of men and women population are overweight. NFHS-5, for first
time, also collected data around prevalence of diabetes and
hypertension among adult population above 15 years of age. The
survey shows that incidence of diabetes among adult population
over age of 15 is significantly high, 30 % prevalence among men and
25 % among women. and found that 30 % male and 25 % female are
diabetic. Similarly, more than 45 % men and around 39 % women
over age of 15 are having high blood pressure or patient of
hypertension. This high incidences of diabetes and hypertension
among adult population is across all states and covers both urban
and rural areas

Narendra Modi ji and also posted grievance on Prime Minister
Grievance cell with the registration number
PMOPG/E/2022/0098202 (Annexure no.2). I received the
attached ‘response from honorable Prime Minister and
FSSAI.(Annexure no. 3)
Even we received the support letter from Food Industries Welfare
Association (FIWA) on 23" May, 2022. (Annexure no. 4) In the
letter FIWA wrote FOPL will significantly help food processing
industry in the country as market or demand shift toward healthy
food, this will be unique opportunity created in the India which help
leapfrogging Indian food processing industry and attract more
foreign investment.
Being aware that diseases like diabetes, cancers and heart attacks
constitute majority of annual deaths in India, and the strong
association of ultra-processed unhealthy diet with such diseases, we
believe that to minimize the burden of NCDs, the reduction of rising
consumption of unhealthy food products is pivotal. The current
scientific evidence favours an urgent action on the FOPL front,

We would like to submit the following key scientific evidence on
these issues as below.
« Ahigher consumption of ultra-processed foods (>4 servings daily)
was independently associated with a 62% relatively increased
hazard for all cause mortality
https://www.bmj.com/content, j.11949« Arecent meta-analysis of studies on the association between ultra-
processed food intakes with all-cause mortality showed that
compared to low consumption, high consumption of UPF increased
death risk.by 29%,
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35231930/
+ A meta-analysis of five experiments assessing the effects of Health
Star Rating (HSR) labels on sales found no significant effect on
calories or sugar consumed; similarly, combined findings from three
research indicated no impact on saturated fat or salt purchased.
https://onlineli iley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/jhn.127
« In a systematic review, evidence from interventions on the effect
of front-of package (FOP) nutrition labeling on food purchases
showed that 3 studies on health star ratings did not reveal an effect
on food purchases compared with the control.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/335172
* The most effective label in reducing perceived healthfulness was
HIWL (‘High-in' Warning Labels), which communicates clear, non-
quantitative messages about high levels of nutrients of concern and
demonstrated the greatest efficacy in reducing the perceived
healthfulness of a sweetened fruit.
https: ed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34726144,
The draft of the amended Food Safety and Standards (Labelling&
Display) Regulations, 2020 requires packaged food to display the
prescribed format of INR by assigning a rating from 1/2 star (leasthealthy) to five stars (healthiest). Therefore we are requesting to
accept the following comments
1. FOPL with warning symbol on foods high in sugar, salt, and
fat are more likely to aware more people before
consuming them. .
Warning labels should be used as preferred
and mandatory choice for this purpose and should be
included in the relevant FSSAI Regulation.
We will be happy to present the matter personally in front of you
addressing this grave concern of health of common people in India
Thanking You
Sincerely Yours
