UNIT 1: ENLIGHTENMENT (La Ilustración)

The Enlightenment: was a cultural movement whose origin was in France

(later spread throughout Europe and America) during the XVIII century
(century of the lights).

Main ideas of the Enlightenment:

- Trust in Reason (human intelligence) --> scientific research and

inventions to improve the lives of Human Beings (progress).

- In favor of freedom and equality.

- Against religious intolerance and superstition.

- Pursuit of happiness (it is achieved thanks to all the aspects above).

Main Illustrated authors: Montesquieu, Rousseau, Voltaire.

The Enlightenment produced a change of mentality in the population,

since that moment, the population will fight to put an end to the Old
Regime.
