Problem Set 2

Azarcon, Mervin M. AE 135 Dd

2.1 Compute the daily evaporation from a free-water surface if the wind speed is 32
km/h (20mph) at 0.15m height, water and air temperature are both 29 0C (800F) and
the relative humidity of air is 50 percent. Atmospheric pressure is 757 mm Hg (29.8
in. Hg). How would your computed value compare with the evaporation from a dry-
soil surface? From a Class A Weather Bureau pan?
Given:

2.2 Assuming that the Horton infiltration equation (𝑓 = 𝑓𝑐 + (𝑓𝑜 − 𝑓𝑐)𝑒−𝑘𝑡) is valid,
determine the constant infiltration rate if f0 = 50mm/h (2.0 iph), f at 10 min is 13
mm/h (0.5 iph), and k=12.9. What is the infiltration rate at 20 min.
Given. f =
13 mm/h k =
12.9 fo = 50
mm/h
Required: f when t = 20 min
Solution:
By using Horton infiltration equation; f = fc + (fo-fc) e-kt
Finding fc at t = 10 min,

13 mm/h = fc +[ (
fc = 0.217 mm/min = 13,mm/hr solving f at
t = 20 min where fc = 13 mm/hr:

f = 13mm/hr + [(50mm/hr-13mm/hr)]

f = 13.50 mm/hr
2.3 Using the Blaney-Criddle method, determine the evapotranspiration (consumptive
use) for corn in May, assuming a crop coefficient k of 0.7, T of 18.30C (650F), and p
of 10 percent.
Given: k
= 0.7 p =
10 %
T = 18.3 °C

Month : May = 31 days ( = 372 hrs.

Annual daytime hrs = 365 days ( ) = 4380 hrs

Required: evapotranspiration (𝜇) for corn in May

Solution:
Using Blaney-criddle Method; 𝜇 = 𝑘𝑝 (0.46𝑇 + 18.03)

μ=97.639
2.4 Using Penman’s equation, determine the evapotranspiration for corn during May at
40O North Latitude, assuming mean minimum, maximum and dewpoint
temperatures of 170C (630F), 240C (750F), and 100C (500F), respectively; 60 percent
of possible sunshine received; 3.7 m/s mean wind speed; 283 elevations; and
negligible heat flux to the soil.
