Lesson Title: STATISTICAL ANALYSIS - CORRELATION

Grade Level: Grade 12 ABM 2

Lesson Length: 60 minutes

I. Analyze Learners

Learners’ general characteristics:

The lesson is designed for grade 12 students. The class of 17 males and 25 females age ranges from
16 – 21 years old. Five of the learners are kinesthetic, 15 members of the class are verbal learners
while of them are audio visual learners. All the students can read and comprehend given examples
showed to them. Given examples are the forms of business organizations.

Entry characteristics:
I. The students in this class possessed kinesthetic, verbal, and audio visual intelligences.

Learning styles:
 Although the class is comprised of students of all learning styles, most students in this class
are visual learners.

II. State Standards and Objectives

This lesson is designed to meet Common Core Standards for Inquiries,
Investigation, and Immersion.

The standards covered in this lesson plan include:

Objective 1: presents written research report revises written research report based on
suggestions and recommendations
Objective 2: Solve for the pearson r correlation of 2 variables manually and using Microsoft
excel.
Objective 3: Interpret the relationship between variables.

III. Select Strategies, Methods, Media, and Materials

Strategies. A variety of teacher-centered and student-centered strategies have
been designed for this lesson and hands on teaching strategy.
Active Participation
Students will share their difficulties and what motivated them to finish their feasibility study. They
will also share what they have learned from the feasibility study that they could share to other
students.

Socratic Method
Present the following questions:
1. What does my success look like?
2. Do your regular practices give you time to grow and learn in your future career?

3. What can you say about this picture?

The Socratic method has been taken from the philiosopher Socrates where the teacher and students throw
questions that will lead to learning the desired objectives of the lesson. In this manner, the lessons are
slightly hidden and the student will hopefully understand why specific theorems in math make sense.

Active Learning instruction based on the article of Braun et al. (2016) entitled, “What Does Active
Learning Mean for Mathematicians?” refers to classroom practices that engage students in activities, such
as reading, writing, discussion, or problem solving, that promote higher-order thinking. An experiment
showed on a structured, active, in-class learning (SAIL) class at University of Pennsylvania that learning in
actively participating group performs better.

Lecture - Discussion
Statisticians use a measure called the correlation coefficient to determine the strength of the linear
relationship between two variables. There are several types of correlation coefficients. The one
explained in this section is called the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient
(PPMC), named after statistician Karl Pearson, who pioneered the research in this area.

The correlation coefficient computed from the sample data measures the strength
and direction of a linear relationship between two quantitative variables. The symbol for
the sample correlation coefficient is r. The symbol for the population correlation
coefficient is r (Greek letter rho).

Correlation in Business
Correlation is another method of sales forecasting. Correlation looks at the strength of a
relationship between two variables.
For marketing, it might be useful to know that there is a predictable relationship between sales and
factors such as advertising, weather, consumer income etc.

Present the formula:

● A scatter plot is a graph of the ordered pairs (x, y) of numbers consisting of the
independent variable x and the dependent variable y.

Positive correlation: A positive relationship exists whereas the independent variable increases in
value, so does the dependent variable

Negative correlation: A negative relationship exists whereas the independent variable increases in
value, the dependent variable falls in value

No correlation: There is no discernible relationship between the independent and dependent variable

Examples

John is an investor. His portfolio primarily tracks the performance of the CONVERGE and John
wants to add the stock of Apple Inc. Before adding Apple to his portfolio, he wants to assess the
correlation between the stock and the CONVERGE to ensure that adding the stock won’t increase the
systematic risk of his portfolio. To find the coefficient, John gathers the following prices for the last
five years.

Integrating Technology.

Technology and Materials. Laptop, Google Meet, PowerPoint slides, Microsoft excel

IV. Utilize Technology, Media, and Materials

Prepare the materials:  The teacher will set up the computer and the link for the online meet.

Prepare the environment: The teacher will make sure that the internet connection is stable.
The speakers and the screen are working well.

Prepare the learners: Students will pray before the class starts. They will be informed about
the objectives of the class. They will also be informed about the assessment after the discussion. By
doing this, students will be comfortable when the class begins.

V. Require Learner Participation

Formative Assessment
1. What is meant by the statement that two variables are related?
2. What is the symbol for the sample correlation coefficient? The population correlation
coefficient?
3. What is the range of values for the correlation coefficient?
4. What is meant when the relationship between the two variables is called positive? Negative?
5. Give examples of two variables that are positively correlated and two that are negatively
correlated.
6. What is the diagram of the independent and dependent variables called? Why is drawing this
diagram important?

VI. Evaluate and Revise

Answer the following problem.
A researcher wishes to see if there is a relationship between the ages and net worth
of the wealthiest Businessmen in Philippines. The data for a specific year are shown.
