UNIT 1 Types of Fractions
There are three different types of fractions.
1. Proper fractions: A proper fraction is a fraction in
which the numerator is less than the denominator.

For example 3 , 5 , 7 , 8 , 11

2. Improper fractions: An improper fraction is a fraction in which the numerator is equal to

or greater than the denominator. Whole numbers are also improper fractions.

UNIT 3 Changing Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions
When the
numerator is greater
Mixed numbers can be easily changed to improper fractions. than the denominator,
it is called an
improper fraction.
Example: Change the following mixed numbers to improper fractions.
2 5 3
(a) 1 3 (b) 2 7 (c) 5 4

Solution:
2 3 2 5 14 5 3 20 3
(a) 1 3 = 3 + 3 (b) 2 7 = 7 + 7 (c) 5 4 = 4 + 4

UNIT 13 Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions represent the same number but have different numerators and denominators.
It is very easy to form an equivalent fraction. All we have to do is multiply or divide the numerator and
denominator by the same number.

Example: Complete the following equivalent fractions.

3 1 4
(a) 6
= (b)
12
= 1 (c) 6
15
= 2 (d)
15
25
= 3

Solution:

It is very easy to compare fractions when they have the same denominator. ‘is greater than’.
The numerator then shows which fraction is smaller or larger. The symbol  means
‘is less than’.

Example: Which is smaller?

Solution:
(a) Both the fractions have the (b) Both the fractions have the
same denominator and the same denominator and the
numerator 1 is less than 4. numerator 2 is less than 6.

UNIT 17 Comparing Fractions

To compare fractions with different denominators, we must change them to the same
denominator; this is called the Lowest Common Denominator or Lowest Common Multiple (L.C.M.).
The Lowest Common Denominator of two or more numbers is the smallest common number that can
be divided by all the denominators. For example:
• the Lowest Common Multiple of 2 and 3 is 6.
• the Lowest Common Multiple of 3, 4 and 8 is 24.
• the Lowest Common Multiple of 3, 4 and 5 is 60.

Example: Which is smaller?

1 1 2 3 4 2
(a) 2 or 3 (b)
15 or 10 (c) 9 or 5

Solution:

UNIT 18 Comparing Fractions

To compare fractions when they have different denominators, we should change them into equivalent
fractions with the same denominator.
Once the denominators are the same, the numerator shows which fraction is smaller or larger.

2 5
Example: Which fraction is larger, 3 or 6 ?

Solution: Since the denominators of the fraction are different, we should

22 4
change them into equivalent fractions with the same denominator. 32
= 6
4 5
Now 6 and 6 have the same denominator and the numerator 5 is greater than 4.
5 4
 6  6
5 2 If we multiply or divide the
 6  3 numerator and denominator
by the same number, equivalent
fractions are formed.

Use ,  or = to show comparisons between the following pairs of fractions.

1 1 1 1 2 3 2 4
