HOW TO RELEASE REFRIGERANT ON SPLIT TYPE AIRCON

Split type aircon are connected by copper tubing, one for the suction line or gas line and the other one is
for the discharge line or liquid line. All split type aircon are pre-charge, it usually as R410A refrigerant
pump down in the outdoor unit and nitrogen for the indoor unit to prevent air to enter from the
surroundings.

Reminder: We might need add refrigerant if 15 ft is not enough height for the copper tubings.

** Assume that the unit is already installed, and the copper tubing are connected from the indoor unit
to the outdoor unit.

1. Slowly remove the cap of the tube to release the nitrogen inside the indoor unit.
2. Connect the suction/gas line and discharge/liquid line on the tubing of the indoor unit.
**Both valve of the outdoor unit is front seated as it is already pre-charge. You can observe that
the suction service has service valve port while it depends on the manufacturer whether to put
service valve port on the discharge service valve. Inside the service valve there is a Schrader
valve, that’s why we need to bring valve connector or valve adapter of (usually) 5/16 size.
3. Next, connect the discharge line from the indoor unit to the discharge service valve on the high
temperature side. Then connect the suction line of the indoor unit to the suction service valve
on the low temperature-pressure side.
** we need gauge manifold and vacuum pump.
4. We need to perform evacuation after we connect all the line to their service valve as dust and
moisture already contaminate the system when we released the nitrogen earlier.
** the moisture may clog the capillary tube causing the system to not cool.
5. Connect the blue hose of the gauge manifold to the suction service port while the yellow hose
to the vacuum pump. Remove the cap from the vacuum pump and connect it to the power
outlet. Using the gauge manifold, open the compound gauge on the low-pressure side. If the
reading reach 30 in. Hg in the compound gauge, close low pressure side valve. Turn of the
vacuum pump then wait for at least 15 minutes to observe the needle of the gauge manifold. If
it stays then there is no leak, but if it moves, it possible has a leak.
6. Use iron wrench to open the valve stem of the discharge service line and close it immediately so
we can release a little amount of refrigerant around 4 psig for the leak test. Make sure that the
low side valves are front seated then proceed on leak testing.
7. Open the discharge service valve counterclockwise using an iron wrench so that the refrigerant
will flow to the liquid line, evaporator until the gas line. After that, open the suction service
valve then try to turn on the split type aircon and observe temperature of the air flowing on the
unit.
