3 Theory of Operations

The aim of the chapter is to explain the functional principles of sets and individual components of the given LINET
product model, and their mutual relations.

Power box

The power box transforms input voltage to 24V AC and sends it to the control unit (input 9). Mains power is supplied
to the power box via a three-core mains cable (in the relevant national standard). The power unit is standard at voltage
230V – 50/60 Hz, and alternatively at voltage 100, 110, 127V – 50/60Hz. A filter is in the mains connector of the power
box. The power box transformer contains two current fuses. The first fuse automatically disconnects voltage at a
temperature of 100°C/212°F and reconnects the voltage after cooldown. The second fuse disconnects the voltage
permanently at a temperature of 130°C / 266°F. The 24 V AC power box has two 2A fuses for the 230V version (2 x 4
A for low voltage – 100, 110, 127 V) and is connected by a guard wire to the undercarriage frame. It is in the head
section of the undercarriage frame. The mains cable runs to the power box on the undercarriage.

3.1.1 Power box overheating

◼ If the transformer in the main control box reaches:

o 100°C / 212°F – The main control box automatically turns off and turns on automatically
after cooling.
o 130°C / 266°F – The heat fuse blows. It is necessary to replace the main control box.

Control unit

The PB46.12 unit is used for controlling seven linear units, with outputs for controllers and a backup rechargeable
battery power source. It is controlled via low-voltage switches and allows the use of membrane keypads. The control
unit has 7 outputs for the linear units, an input for connecting a rechargeable battery, and an input for control panels
with safety functions (ACP). The PB46 unit also contains inputs for accelerometers, weight transducers, an
undercarriage module, limit switches, and an add-on matrix controller. The PB46 unit is built into the instrument case
and is equipped for dual power from the mains and from batteries. During mains operation, the rechargeable battery
is continuously powered and charged, and while the rechargeable battery is in operation, the electronics are
disconnected after approximately 3 minutes without command. The control unit has a function to stabilise speed of
the lift units (see Stabilization (calibration) of speed of lift units) of the mattress platform, and to lock the units (See
Positioning function locks and safety circuit to detect overload (See Detecting overload).
The voltage is conducted to the control unit by a cable from the power box, which is located in the undercarriage.

3.2.2 Control unit modes and safety functions

The architecture of the control unit is designed to exclude or significantly limit the risks arising from using a
programmable electronic system.
The default general requirement is the safety of the system when there is one fault. The basic safety features are:

3.2.2.1 Stabilization (calibration) of speed of lift units

The function to stabilise speed of lift units allows the speed of lift of all columns to be synchronized. This makes it
possible to maintain the bed in a horizontal position. Stabilisation must be performed after each change of column,
control unit, and accelerometer. The column units are calibrated using the ACP controller by pressing 4 buttons
(mattress platform lift upwards, mattress platform lift downwards, Antitrendelenburg and CPR) simultaneously for
approximately 3 seconds. The signal LEDs of locks will then flash. By pressing and holding the "CPR" button,
calibration begins and the button must be held pressed until all the LEDs signalling the locks dim. Successful calibration
is signalled by an audio signal. (See chapter Calibration of Lift Units)

D9S001GE5-0101_04 10/89
3.2.2.2 STOP button located on the LCD panel
The main STOP button immediately stops all movements of the bed (undesirable movement) and deactivates GO if
positioning is not permitted or during failure of electrical components. A 10 kΩ resistor is connected in parallel to the
STOP button inside the keypad. The electronics of the system detect the correct connection of the resistor (connection
of keypad and functionality of the STOP button). Its interruption (error in keypad, faulty resistor, cable...) is signalled
by an intermittent tone from the control unit. Without correct connection of both controllers to the resistors (both
iBoards), this function after activation with the GO button is only active for 5s. If at least one resistor (iBoard) is
connected, GO is active as standard for 3 minutes.

3.2.2.3 GO button located on the ACP panels, the handset, and side rails
All the control functions are conditional on the GO button being pressed (only the CPR and STOP button do not
require the GO button to be pressed). When GO is pressed, the control system is activated for 3 minutes (except
during fault of the STOP circuit – described above). When any function is pressed for more than 2 seconds, the button
is released for an extension of the GO period by another 3 minutes. When a function is pressed for less than 2 seconds,
the original 3 minutes remains. After 3 minutes from the previously selected function, the control electronics are
deactivated and any further function is conditional on the GO button being pressed again. Pressing the GO button is
only valid if no other control button has been pressed at the same time. The use of the GO button significantly limits
the possibility of accidental movement of the bed during a fault or from unintentional pressing of controllers.

3.2.2.4 Simultaneous pressing of any two buttons

In the event of uncontrollable movement of the bed caused by, for example, a broken button, the bed may be stopped
immediately using the STOP button or by pressing any key (it must be a button other than the button causing the fault,
however). If it is pressed for more than 1 second, the movement of the bed will be blocked and a STOP code
announced on the iBoard display (see table of STOP codes). Unblocking is automatic after all presses have been
released (including the error ones).

3.2.2.5 Double power switches

The power switches are doubled. The main switch is a relay type and controlled with a microprocessor. Switching it
on is conditional to the priority in hardware detection of commands from external controllers independent of the
microprocessor. This means that switching it on is dependent on of the functional buttons being pressed, which is
detected by a separate circuit independent of the microprocessor. This ensures safety even in a situation where the
microprocessor would activate a positioning function spontaneously as a result of an error. Switching it on is also
conditional on a fault-free connection of the STOP button and internal error diagnostics. The switching and
commutation of the electrical motor lifting units is safeguarded by relays. The second switch is a semi-conductor type.
It provides safety and speed control, as well as delayed switching and early interruption of current before the relay
contacts to protect their contacts and extend their life. The fault-free functioning of both switching elements is monitored
independently. A fault in these elements resulting in the electronics no longer being resistant to the first error is
signalled by a regular flashing of the mains LED. At this moment, only one movement of the bed is permitted, after
which this mode is signalled by a regular flashing of the mains and all locks LED. Further movement is possible only
after pressing the STOP button. After 5 individual movements the control unit is blocked permanently.

3.2.2.6 RC circuits – protection against shorting and spontaneous movement

An RC circuit is installed in all the analogue control elements connected to the ACP control unit (ACP, handset,
mobilift, foot controller). The value of the RC circuit resistor is 390 Ω. If the function is not active, the circuit resistance
is infinite as standard. When any function is pressed, the resistance of the circuit is 390 Ω, the function is detected as
valid and it begins. If a short is present in the circuit of the button, the resistance drops below 200 Ω, the control unit
detects the function as invalid and positioning does not occur. The RC circuit serves to prevent spontaneous
movements of the bed caused by a short in the wiring.

D9S001GE5-0101_04 11/89
3.2.2.7 Measuring leaks
The control unit is capable of measuring leaks in the individual controllers in a range of kΩ.

≥ 1 kΩ - Leakage

390 Ω - OK

0 < 200 Ω - Short

If resistance is detected in any of the controllers, it is signalled by all the lock LEDs flashing, the control unit always
permitting one movement of the bed after the STOP button is pressed. Information about the leak is recorded
simultaneously in the permanent memory of the control unit.

3.2.2.8 Positioning function locks

The positioning function locks have an electronic design and their current condition is always saved in an EEPROM
type memory. If they possess a fault, this condition is signalled by the relevant lock flashing its LED.

3.2.2.9 Detecting overload

While monitoring current drawn by the motor units, the electronics stabilise the maximum current and thus partially
limit start-up current spikes. If a constant current overload is detected, movement is halted after approximately 1
second.

3.2.2.10 Thermal protection

Built-in thermal protection signals temperature exceeded in the internal cooler and near the switching transistors
(approx. 100°C) during overload. A constant tone signals this condition. After an additional increase of approximately
15°C, the switching power elements are disconnected (this makes positioning impossible), also signalled by a constant
tone. Information about the thermal overload is recorded simultaneously in the permanent memory of the control unit.

3.2.2.11 Overheated main control box

◼ If the temperature of the heat sink in the main control box reaches:
o 85°C /185°F – The battery charging function disconnects.
o 100°C / 212°F – The battery charging function disconnects, sound signalization occurs and
1 is added to LINIS (see LINIS chapter 7.1 – page 3)
o 115°C / 239°F – The bed stops functioning and sound signalization occurs.
◼ The bed becomes functional again after the main control box cools down.

3.2.2.12 Connectors
The inputs and outputs of the control unit have connectors of different type, meaning they may not be mixed. If
connectors of the same type (telephone ones) are used, mixing them up during assembly or servicing does not lead
to damage of the control unit.

3.2.3 Saved values

The control unit saves the following values

a) Statistical values, Overload values.Calibrated values
b) Records of previous events
c) All saved values are sent with currently measured values to the communication module interface (LAN or
Wi-Fi), from where they can be loaded to a PC via the web interface.

Rechargeable battery

Input/output voltage 24 V DC
Class II IP65
Maximum charging time 24 hours

Lead hermetic rechargeable batteries 2x12V/1.2 Ah are connected in series in a plastic housing, protected by a 15 A
car fuse and current fuse. The plastic housing is inserted in a control unit box. The rechargeable batteries serve as
an emergency backup power source for the bed while it is disconnected from the mains electricity or during
transport. The rechargeable battery type has no memory effect and should not be run fully flat to increase their lifespan.

3.3.1 Charging of rechargeable battery

Battery (S6011479ND)

The rechargeable batteries are charged intelligently from the control unit. The charging method used is called the
"Dual Level Float Charger" method (two charge levels, current limiting and automatic switching from charging to
maintenance mode).

Information about charging and modes of the rechargeable battery is signalled by the rechargeable battery’s LED as
follows:
Off The rechargeable battery is charged.
(one exception may be a certain type of damage to
the rechargeable battery, which may occur due to its
age or unsuitable storage)

Flashes (on for short time, off for a longer time) The rechargeable battery is charging.
If this type of signal occurs continuously over the long
term, it is necessary to replace the rechargeable
battery!

Flashes (on for a long time, off for a short time) Low rechargeable battery voltage (either completely
flat or defective rechargeable battery). If this type of
signal occurs continuously over the long term, it is
necessary to replace the rechargeable battery!

Permanently on No rechargeable battery

(broken power lead, faulty rechargeable battery,
missing rechargeable battery faulty fuse)
Flashes rapidly The rechargeable battery is very flat, it is necessary to
replace or recharge it. Positioning of the bed is
disconnected, except for CPR function.

D9S001GE5-0101_04 13/89
Head side rails

The head side rails are at the sides of the head section of the bed's mattress platform rear section. Depending on the
modifications to the bed, one part of the head side rails may include loudspeakers, signalling,

Nurse call button, or iBoards with lift controllers. The Nurse Call system is connected using an eight-core cable that
runs from the merging board inside the head side rail to a Mini DIN 8 connector on the backrest of the mattress
platform. From here it is connected to the Nurse Call module (each side rail separately). The control buttons of the
keypad are connected from the merging board by a cable inside the side rail to the iBoard. The iBoard module is
connected with the control unit (input 17 - left, input 18 right) via disconnection on the back rest (Mini DIN6)

3.4.1 iBoard

The iBoard control panels constitute the main control element. They provide for movement of the bed, configuration
of bed functions, and control and display of the weighing system. They are built into the outer side of both head section
side rails, to which they are connected using six screws covered by six adhesive blanking plugs. They are connected
using 6-core cables with a miniature series connector under a plastic cover. To replace, it is not necessary to remove
the cabling from the side rail mechanism. The connector is linked to the control unit via a Mini DIN 6 connector and
cable (input 17 - left iBoard, 18 - right iBoard. Alternatively, a cable connects the inner movement keypad of the head
side rail via a merging board (if a keypad is fitted to the bed). The iBoard panel detects these functions and passes
them to the control unit digitally. The iBoard contains a STOP button that immediately halts all movements of the bed
when pressed if positioning is not permitted or during failure of electrical components. The electronics of the system
detect the correct connection of the STOP button, whose wires are connected via cable jointly with the power and data
conductors of the display. If one iBoard is disconnected, the other is still functional. If both iBoards are disconnected,
the STOP button is not functional and the control unit activates into emergency mode (see chapter STOP button
located on the LCD panel).
On the rear side of the panel is a production and technical label, and the backrest accelerometer.

3.4.2 iBoard Basic

The iBoard Basic control panels are a basic control elements. They provide for configuration of bed functions, and
control, display of the weighing system and bed exit alarm. They are built into the outer side of both head side rails,
to which they are connected using six screws covered by six adhesive blanking plugs. They are connected using 6-
core cables with a mini Din connector to the cable in the side rail mechanism (It leads from the control unit).
The iBoard Basic is equipped with 2,4” display and keyboard with buttons. There are no positioning buttons on the
panel. On the rear side of the panel is a production and technical label, and the backrest accelerometer.
Due to absence of STOP button the bed must be equipped with ACP with STOP button.

3.4.3 Backrest accelerometer in head control panels

The backrest accelerometer is a part of the both iBoards Basic and is used to determine the tilt of the bed's
backrest. When the tilt of the backrest changes gradually due to gravity, the voltage in the accelerometer changes
and the angle of tilt is calculated. This information is sent to the control unit, which then displays it on the panel. The
angle of tilt is relative to the ground, which means that if the bed is not on a horizontal floor the backrest of the bed
is tilted, the angle of tilt of the floor (ground) is added to the angle of tilt of the frame. The control panels cannot be
interchange – Left must be on the left side and right on the right side. In case of incorrect connection it displays
wrong tilt angle of the backrest.

Foot siderails

3.5.1 Controllers in foot side rails

The control panels (left/right) allow the patient to set the position of the backrest and thighrest. Autocontour buttons
are also available. The keypads are backlit using integrated LEDs. Backlighting has 2 levels - lower (when GO button
is inactive) and higher (when GO button is active). Backlighting and positioning is inactive when the side rail is dropped.
Controller commands are detected and digitally transferred via a "Y" cable to the control unit (input 23). The cables of
the side rail (from the EP module) can be disconnected at the edge of the mattress platform using Mini Din connectors.

Additional supervisor control panel (ACP)

The additional supervisor control panel is an optional control element.

It is connected to the control unit via a 14-core cable terminated by a 13-pin DIN connector. The ACP panel is
connected to a Plug&Play adaptor on the side of the bed or directly to the control unit in position 1. If the bed is
equipped with iBoard panels, this controller does not contain a STOP button.
The supervisor control panel contains a lock to block individual functions of the control unit, indicator lights for the
mode and condition of the rechargeable battery, a selection of special functions, and settings for standard positions of
the bed.

Handset

The handset is an optional controler of the bed. The handset is available in two versions, with illuminated buttons
or without (or as a variant with mattress platform lift - up/down). The handset button lighting is active if the bed is
connected to the mains. The functions of both handsets are identical. A cable with an 8-pin DIN connector is connected
to a Plug&Play adaptor, which is linked to the control unit at position 21. The controller has an RC unit to detect short
circuits.

Mobi-Lift®

Mobi-Lift® handles are optional ancillary handles with a built-in height adjustment button. They serve as an aid for
improving patient safety when getting up. They allow the patient to raise and lower the mattress platform. They are
at the calf section on both sides, dropped only in one axis in the direction of the feet. There are two switches in the
head of the controller, and a cable terminated with an RJ11 connector runs from them. The wires are connected in
order from the top - brown, yellow, white. The brown wire is for positioning upwards, the yellow cable has an RC
module, and the white cable is for positioning downwards. When any button is pressed, the middle connection (yellow,
RC module) is also activated. Both controllers (left and right) have the same cable connection. Mobi-Lift® controllers
are connected directly to the control unit at positions No 24 (left) and 25 (right).

Limit switches

3.9.1 Left and right side rail limit switches

The limit switches serve with the control unit to detect the current position of the side rails. If the side rail is in the up
position, the limit switch is pressed via the mechanism of the side rails and a signal is sent to the control unit and vice
versa. Limit switches are separately connected – for each (head, foot) side rail. The control unit thus identifies the
positions of each side rail. The limit switches are connected to the control unit by a 6-pin RJ11 connector – Left side
rail + X-ray position 12, Right side rail limit switches in the position 13. The concept of the limit switches is to determine
that when the side rail is up, the given switch is closed (in the case of non-connection, broken wire, the situation is
detected as dangerous, i.e., side rail down)

ATTENTION: When connection of the limit switches to the control unit is reversed, the functions are also reversed,
meaning that when the side rail is down the control unit detects the side rail as being in the up position and vice versa
– in the case of lateral tilt, the bed does not behave as if the side rail were up, i.e., it does not stop at a tilt of 7°.

3.9.2 X-ray cassette limit switch

The limit switch for the X-ray cassette allows whether the X-ray cassette is inserted into the compartment (it eliminates
the danger of collision of the back rest and frame of the mattress platform) to be detected. The limit switch of the X-
ray cassette is in the X-ray cassette compartment. A cable, also connected to the limit switches of the left side rails,
runs from the switch. In the connector, this switch has its own position – identified by the control unit.

3.9.3 Extension limit switch

The central extension limit switch allows the calf rest extension’s position to be detected. If the extension is moved
outwards, the switch is off (code 0). If the extension is moved inwards by half, the switch is closed (code 1). Detection
of the calf extension’s position is important to avoid a collision of the calf rest with the ground during positioning.
The switch is connected via a 4-pin RJ 11 connector to the control unit at position 14.

The calf accelerometer allows the tilt of the bed's calf rest to be determined. When the tilt of the calf rest changes
gradually due to gravity, the voltage in the accelerometer changes and the angle of tilt is calculated. This
information is sent to the control unit (input 27). Information about the tilt is displayed in the LINIS system. The tilt angle
of the calf rest is important during positioning in order to avoid collision of the mattress platform extension with the
ground.

Weighing module

The weighing module allows the bed's mattress platform load to be calculated. Four weighing sensors (tensometers)
are connected to the weighing module. The tensometer constants, the gravitational constant, as well as the overall
calibration constant generated during calibration of the weighing scales are saved to the weighing module. The weight
of the load is calculated from tensometer data and calibration constants and sent digitally to the control unit. The
processed information is displayed on the iBoard. One part of the module is a speaker for the Bed Exit Alarm
(sound / space - 0.5 s/0.5 s). The weighing module is powered from the control unit by a 4-core cable with RJ14
connector and is connected to position 15. The Nurse Call module is also powered from the weighing module. The
weighing module is inserted into a holder on the mattress platform frame of the bed at the foot section.

D9S001GE5-0101_04 21/89
Weighing sensor (tensometer)

According to the load, the electrical resistance in the weighing sensor changes. The change is transmitted immediately
to the weighing module, which processes the values. There are four weighing sensors (tensometers) on the bed – 2
at the feet and 2 at the head. They are secured using eight screws (6±2 Nm). The weighing sensors are connected to
the weighing module by a 4-core shielded cable. The functions of the individual cores are described in the table.

Nurse call

A device for urgent summoning of personnel, remote control and communication with patient, nurse call comprises
several components. The main component is a central box processing signals from peripheral components and
transmitting them to the output. The Nurse Call central box is connected to the weighing module by RJ connector to
the position K1 (See schema in chapter 3.11), which also powers it. It receives information about the state of the Bed
Exit Alarm from the weighing module. 4 peripherals are connected to the central box – Control of Nurse call function,
which is in the head side rail controllers - left and right (including speaker/microphone). The central box also contains
an output (DIN connector - female (13 pins)), via which it sends and receives data to/from external equipment. The
Nursecall output connector K2 ends by 37 pin connector. The output for connection to the Nurse Call system is on
the undercarriage in the head section.

Undercarriage module (UcMo)

The undercarriage module (hereinafter UcMo) allows all peripherals located on the undercarriage to be controlled
and integrates the control of these peripherals via the control unit.
The UcMo is logged in the control unit as digital peripheral No 4.
The UcMo is connected to the control unit by a 4-core communication cable to the position 16 with Molex connectors.
This cable carries power, analogue signals, and digital data simultaneously. The power supply of the UcMo also
powers the 5th castor, I-Brake. Voltage is measurable at the connector on pin number 1 and 3 (see diagram, connector
No 8)
The analogue signal of the UcMo allows the presence of mains power to the bed to be identified. This information is
essential for the function of the 5th castor and I-Brake.
2x lift foot controllers and 2x lateral controllers are also connected to the UcMo. The signal from these controllers is
analogue and is converted in the UcMo to digital before being transmitted to the control unit. The UcMo is fitted with
leak measurement and short-circuit detection in the controller wires. This information is transmitted to the control unit.
If there is a non-driven fifth castor on the bed, a PCB board is added to the undercarriage module to allow function of
the fifth castor to be controlled.

Foot controller (height setting)

The foot controller for height setting is a paired component of the bed. It is located on the undercarriage at the foot
section of the bed and attached to the undercarriage frame with two screws (11±1 Nm). There are three buttons on
the controller – lift upwards, lift downwards and lift to examination position. A cable runs from the foot controller to the
undercarriage module (UcMo). The controllers are connected to the UcMo by an RJ12 connector. In the UcMo, the
connectors of the controllers are attached at position 4 and 5. The Mini GO function is engaged in the software of the
control unit for the foot controller. This is a function whereby pressing the foot controller button once again, the GO
period runs for 20 seconds without the need for pressing GO on the siderail controller or handset (allows positioning
without having to use your hands).

Foot controller (lateral tilt)

The foot controller for lateral tilt is different on each side. It is located on the undercarriage at the head section of the
bed and attached to the undercarriage frame with two screws (11±1 Nm). There are three buttons on the controller –
tilt left, tilt right, GO button. A cable runs from the foot controller to the undercarriage module (UcMo). It is connected
to the UcMo by an RJ12 connector. In the UcMo, the connectors of the controllers are attached at position 2 and 3.

control unit.

5th castor

The fifth, electrically lifted, castor allows easier handling of the bed while it is being moved down long, narrow
corridors. The 5th castor is controlled using the brake pedal, the signal running to the undercarriage module. The
signal from the undercarriage module informs the electronics of the 5th castor whether or not the power lead is plugged
into the mains. This signal prevails over the signal about the brake pedal’s mode. If the power lead is plugged into
the mains, the 5th castor is always deactivated (up). If the operator steps on the pedal and moves it into the position
"Green pedal pressed" and the power lead is not plugged into the mains, the control unit issues a signal to activate
the 5th castor (movement downwards). If the operator steps on the pedal and moves it into the position "Pedals
horizontal" or "Red pedal pressed", the control unit issues a signal for deactivation (movement upwards).
The drive is an electric motor – it is protected by a 3A current fuse and limit switch in the upper limit position of the
worm gear transmission.
The 5th castor is powered and controlled via the undercarriage module via two cables (power, data) at position 8.
The voltage for the servo motor is measurable in the undercarriage module on the connector at position 13 (see
diagram). An analogue signal goes from the 5th castor and is converted to a digital signal in the undercarriage module
and then detected in the control unit and vice versa.

I-Brake

The I-Brake is a device allowing automatic braking of unbraked beds after they have been connected to the mains.
I-Brake automatically brakes a bed within 60 s after it has been connected to the mains. If the brake is deactivated
mechanically (for example, during cleaning), the system brakes the bed again. The principle of the device is an
electromagnetic impulse on the rod of the Castor Central Control (CCC), replacing the activity of the operator. The
position of the CCC (braked – unbraked) is detected by a single magnetic limit switch. Its signal is transmitted via the
undercarriage module to the control unit. If the rod does not achieve the desired braked position, the I-Brake repeats
the entire process twice more. The drive is an electric motor – it is protected by a 3A current fuse and limit switches
in both limit positions of the worm gear transmission. The voltage in the undercarriage module is measured at the
connector (pin 1(+) and 3(-)) at position 7 in the diagram. The manual braking function is preserved.

Night illumination

The control unit allows a pair of illuminating "white" LEDs to be connected, ensuring illumination of the mattress
platform. The night illumination (LEDs) are connected via a ribbon cable to the control unit at position 22.

iDrive - Driven 5th castor

The bed may be fitted with a driven i-Drive Power wheel to help hospital personnel move a bed with a patient on it
while applying only minimum force.
The driven castor (DrCa) i-Drive Power is located in the middle of the bed’s undercarriage. Using the iDrive’s servo
mechanism, the iDrive is lifted according to the operator’s need or dropped and forced against the floor in a way that
it is possible to use the castor's torque to make it easier to move the bed in a straight direction. The castor has its own
rechargeable battery and charging independent of the functions of the bed. If the iDrive has been fully discharged,
the functions of the bed can still be used. The bed has one I-Drive Power controller.

3.23.3 IDrive control panels

The iDrive is activated by the activation panel, which is on the bed’s undercarriage and protrudes from the cover of
the undercarriage. Activation panel of TrFu with buttons ON (activation of TrFu for 3 minutes, extension from last
selected function) and button OFF for lifting the driven castor. After GO is activated, the castor remains braked until it
is given a movement command by the button. After standard expiry of the "ON period" the system switches off, the
iDrive does not lift, and it is braked if it is not already. After OFF is pressed (for approximately 350 ms to protect
against accidental pressing), the iDrive lift function is activated and after it has retracted, the "ON period" is
deactivated and the system enters sleep mode. This button cannot be activated if any other button is pressed on the
controller or the touch sensor is switched on.
The i-Drive driven castor is controlled using the iDrive controller. The controller contains four pressable buttons and
one touch sensor.
If "Forward" and "Reverse" are pressed at the same time on the control panel without the touch sensor being on,
the built-in accelerometer in the control unit will be calibrated for the horizontal position of the bed after 5 seconds,
which is signalled by a 2-second audio signal.
The cable of the iDrive's controller runs along the frame of the mattress platform and the connecting tube to the
undercarriage and is connected via a 6-pin DIN connector to the iDrive control unit at position 4. The control panel is
powered from the iDrive control unit.

D9S001GE5-0101_04 39/89
NOTE: The main control panel has a touch sensor; the user's hand must be in constant contact with the touch
sensor for the functions to be used. If the hand is removed from the touch sensor, i-Drive Power stops.

NOTE: The deployment and retraction of the i-Drive Power wheel is controlled electronically on the activation panel.

i-Drive Power control panels

3.23.4 Emergency button to retract the iDrive

The emergency button for lifting the driven castor serves as a safety feature in situations where, for example, the
standard button for lifting stops functioning or the I-Drive battery is fully discharged. The button is in the middle of the
control unit fixed on a holder. The cable runs from the emergency button directly to the driven castor server.
Emergency retraction of i-Drive Power:
1. Press any GO button on the bed.
2. Deactivate the driven castor using the main off switch.
3. Press the emergency castor retraction button.
NOTE: Only use the emergency castor retraction button if the battery is fully discharged or if there is a castor error in
order to push the bed manually to a safe place without use of the driven castor.

3.23.5 iDrive control unit 1

The control unit is used to control a special direct current motor (300W, 36V/60uH/0.8Ohm), one servo of the driven
castor (36V, 3A max.), and an electromagnetic brake. It is equipped with an input for a 36V rechargeable battery, an
AC charging source, an input for the "Braked Bed" magnetic switch, and an analogue motor temperature sensor
input.
When the bed is plugged into the mains, the rechargeable battery is charged and the travel functions of the bed are
blocked. After the bed is disconnected from the mains, all the drive functions are available if the rechargeable battery
has been sufficiently charged. If no command is given in battery mode within approximately 3 minutes, the electronics
are then automatically disconnected and minimum energy consumption mode starts. Restart is automatic after
pressing the ON button on the ON/OFF activation panel.

D9S001GE5-0101_04 40/89
3.23.6 Data transmission

It is possible to communicate with the control unit and obtain immediate values from the control unit and logged
data.
The operating hours of individual functions are logged in the control unit, as is their sum, amp hours of driven castor,
number and maximum value of over-voltage in the mains, last ten codes of system errors, last 10 codes of
emergency stops, last 5 codes of leaks on controller, and number of complete battery discharges.

3.23.7 IDrive power box

The i-Drive Power driven castor is charged from an AC power source. The power box is directly above the main
power box of the bed at the foot section of the bed's undercarriage frame. The power is supplied by a 3-core cable
from the main power box to the i-Drive Power box. The i-Drive Power box transforms the voltage to approximately 24
V AC (depending on the mains voltage) and is protected by a current fuse. The power box is then connected to the
control unit by a power cable terminated with a Lumberg connector.

i-Drive Power Supply (S6015150ND)

D9S001GE5-0101_04 41/89
3.23.8 Correction of voltage on iDrive

The voltage on the driven castor is corrected both to protect and for greater ease of use. To protect the iDrive, its
voltage is corrected so that the current does not exceed approximately 29 A. For more direct movement over an
inclined surface, the voltage is corrected according to the tilt of the bed measured by the accelerometer. For proper
functioning of this correction, the accelerometer must be calibrated in a horizontal position – see above. One effect
of this function may be a minor correction of voltage expressed when passing over certain types of unevenesses.
The voltage on the driven castor is also corrected according to the battery voltage, so that its lower voltage during
gradual discharge is compensated for.

3.23.9 iDrive rechargeable battery

The driven castor rechargeable battery comprises three 12V rechargeable batteries connected in series.
The battery is charged if the bed is connected to the mains and is braked.
Charging uses the "Dual Level Float Charger" system (two charge levels, current limiting, automatic switching from
charging to maintenance mode). If the maximum permitted charging current or the maximum charging period is
exceeded, charging is disconnected and the condition is signalled by all the battery's LEDs flashing.
The battery condition is signalled during discharge or charging only if the "ON period" is active.
In the event of very low battery charge, this condition is signalled by an intermittent audio signal.

Battery indicator levels (i-Drive Power):

1. Flashing: critically discharged

2. 50% charged
3. 75% charged
4. 100% charged

RC circuit

5.4.1 Function description and purpose

For improved safety reasons peripheral controls (ACP, patient hand control, siderail controls and Mobilift) have been
fitted with RC components. These allow the control box to recognise whether a circuit activation is a valid press of a
button or a short circuit. In such a case, the function is blocked as protection against a short circuit. Short circuit
protection only works when all controls are fitted with RC components and the function is activated in the control box.

Eleganza 5 beds have short-circuit detection turned on by default. It is not possible to turn short-circuit
detection off.

D9S001GE5-0101_04 62/89
Safe Stop (Anticrush)

Safe Stop prevents user of the bed from injuries due to crushing by the lowered Mattress Platform.
When obstacle occurs on the undercarriage and Mattress Platform is going down, the motion is automatically
stopped.

5.5.1 Disable of Safe Stop system

Only by iBed Diagnostic application.
