Instructions: Using examples from chapter 11, answer the questions in full

1. Who is Mrs. Dubose? Describe four details about her physical appearance.

Answer: Mrs. Dubose is a very old lady who lives two doors up the street from the
Finches. She spends most of her day in bed and the rest of it in a wheelchair as she is ill
(pg. #).

2. How does she treat Jem and Scout in the beginning of the chapter? Why does she
treat them this way? (3 points)

Answer: She is rude to them. She calls Scout an ugly little girl, and threatens to tell
Atticus to send Jem to a reform school. She is very old fashioned and stuck in her ways.
She also insults Atticus about defending a black man, which makes Jem lash out. He
refuses to listen to insults about his father (pg. #).

3. Why does Jem get back at Mrs. Dubose? What are the consequences for his
actions? (4 pts)

Answer: Jem is tired of listening to Mrs. Dubose insult his father, especially for
defending Tom. Jem’s consequences from his father are to read to Mrs. Dubose every
afternoon after school and Saturdays for a month (pg. #).

4. What does Atticus say is his reason for defending Tom Robinson? (why is Atticus
defending Tom?) (2 pts)
Answer: Atticus says that he is defending Tom, because he doesn’t care what other
people say, it is the right thing to do. He has to “abide by” his own conscience (pg. #).
5. What did Mrs. Dubose die from? Why does Atticus tell Jem and Scout that she
was one of the bravest ladies he had ever met, even though she is very prejudiced?

Answer: Mrs. Dubose died because she was a morphine addict. She was suffering from
withdrawal, so she would seize. She died beholden to no one when she died. She was not
hooked on morphine anymore (pg. #).

6. If you were told that you had to do something that was against your personal
views/conscience, because this is what society told you to do, what would you do?
