Elon Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Elon, North Carolina. - El Centro, part of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity Education
at Elon University, is hosting a virtual identity panel titled Who Am I? on Wednesday, Sept. 30,
2020 at 6 p.m. to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
The panel, which will be moderated by Oscar Miranda, the assistant director of Access and
Student Support, will consist of Elon students, faculty, and staff as they reflect on what being
Latinx/Hispanic means to them.
“Latinx people come in all races and skin colors, and we have a great diversity of cultures,
languages, beliefs, values and lived experiences. We are not a monolithic community,” said
Vanessa Bravo, an associate professor of Strategic Communications at Elon University and dual
citizen of Costa Rica and the United States, on being Latinx.
Panelists for the event include Nina Namaste, associate professor of Spanish in the Department
of World Languages and Cultures; Luis Garay, director of the Gender and LGBTQIA Center;
Mackenzie Martinez, student; East Santiago, student; Ana Eguiguren, student; and M.J.
Larrazabal, graduate student.
