Prepare for an essay about whether punishing various forms of free speech is
ultimately negative or positive. You must develop a claim and conduct research to
find sources that support the claim. You must also create an outline that will guide
the drafting of your essay.

Your assignment should include the following elements:

● A claim that expresses your opinion about the topic

● A research question that guides your search for sources

● Evidence from sources that you find through research

● An outline that organizes your claim, supporting reasons, and evidence

Books have been banned in school curriculum due to political and or relgious
reasons, which is no reason to ban or exclude a child or persons from engaging on
their own time or in school hours.

Why are some of the banned books in public schools considered inappropriately
banned or beneficial to the student’s learning and or development of one’s self?

Books like captain underpants have been banned in certain areas for “Inappropriate”
language though, students have most likely been exposed to these words at home
as underpants is a normal word used for your undergarments. Allowing children to
be exposed to and understanding the literary world is important as it opens a child
up to multiple social, emotional, and historical understandings. Those who ban these
books just simply for the reasons of it having “Inappropriate” language are shutting
the doors to your mind and others. In middle school, my class read a book about
slavery and the book contained slur words in it that my teacher read outloud. Though
before she read it to the class, she explained to the class what the word meant and
that she did not mean it when she read it, it was directed to the characters. This
book opened my eyes to many social problems occurring in our world today and abc
then. Just because this book has slur words in it does not mean it should be banned,
if it were I would never have the understanding I have about the world back when
segregation and slavery kept us and those of other race seperated, but rather I would
be ignorant.

For this reason our public schools should not ban our books, they are important to a
student’s development and is needed for them to understand the world around them.
So many books are banned in our schools, and I highly encourage you take the time
to read them.

You should have completed a draft of this assignment in the activity before this one.
If you haven't done so, go back and complete that activity now.

Ask yourself these questions as you revise:

● Does my claim take a clear stand on the issue of free speech? Does it express an
opinion that some people are likely to disagree with?
● Is my research question broad enough to require several sources to answer? Is it
narrow enough that I can eventually find a satisfying answer?

● Is my evidence both credible and relevant? Are the author and publication of each
source trustworthy? Is the information in each source supported by other
sources? Is each source transparent about where it got its information?

● Does my outline organize my reasons and evidence thoroughly and clearly?

Use this rubric to determine how well you're meeting the criteria for the assignment.
