Art Appreciation - SY2122-2T

Compare and contrast the concepts of art according to Western thought and
Filipino notion of personhood or pagkatao. Explain briefly.

01 Art and Humanities

Western art is divided into three categories, which are as follows: Academic,
Elitist, and Hierarchical. Only individuals who have been educated are regarded
artists under the Academic notion, whereas in the Elitist concept, the term "artist"
is reserved for those in higher social levels. The Hierarchical idea encompasses a
wide range of art forms, including liberal and servile art, high and low art, major
and minor art or craft and many more. The Labas, Loob, and Lalim are the
three notions that make up the Filipino concept of personhood or pagkatao, just
as Western art has three. The Labas is made up of our physical body, which
comprises our color, weight, and height, among other things. The Loob is made up
of our mental state, which comprises our intelligence, attitude, thoughts, and
feelings. The Lalim is made up of our inner self, spiritual self, and conscience or
what we call "budhi" in Filipino Terminology. Because there is no such separation
in the Filipino conception of art as there is in the West, there is no distinction
between arts and crafts in the Philippines.
