Summative for unit 5: Natural Sciences

The purpose of this summative assignment is to be prepared to argue your position

regarding the given Knowledge Question.
For this summative assignment you need to address the following KQ: “Is there solid
justification for regarding knowledge highly in the natural sciences?”

Consider the KQ from two perspectives. For each perspective make a claim and provide
support in the form of an explanation.
Maximum 400 words. Please write the word count of your work. It must be submitted in
Turnitin

An explanation follows a knowledge claim. A knowledge claim is any statement made,

whether in answering a direct question or in developing your own argument.
A good explanation gives all the necessary and sufficient reasons to answer the questions
why or how. Necessary reasons are the ones without which the claim we made would be
false. It is a necessity. Sufficient reasons are all the reasons that are needed for the claim
to be true.

Checklist to assess the summative task

The student identifies two perspectives in their answer to the Knowledge Question 1

Perspective 1: There is an explicit claim that provides an answer to the KQ (The focus 1
is maintained on the knowledge question)
Perspective 1: The student provides an explicit explanation: Gives sufficient and 1
necessary reasons justifying why the claim is made.
Perspective 1: The student uses content (new information) that responds to how 1
and/or why the claim is true. The explanation shows causation (critical thinking).
The explanation stays on topic. Examples are not counted, but the student may
choose to use quotes.
Perspective 2: There is an explicit claim that provides an answer to the KQ (The focus 1
is maintained on the knowledge question)
Perspective 2: The student provides an explicit explanation: Gives sufficient and 1
necessary reasons justifying why the claim is made.
Perspective 2: The student uses content (new information) that responds to how 1
and/or why the claim is true. The explanation shows causation (critical thinking).
The explanation stays on topic. Examples are not counted, but the student may
choose to use quotes.
The student writes a conclusive statement that takes into account both perspectives 1
(mini conclusion)
Uses a competent structure in the paragraph. The structure of the paragraph works. 1
The entire paragraph is about the same topic. The paragraph has unity.
Is clear and understandable. This refers to communication and language. It is 1
readable.
The work is within the word limit. Not included in the word count are the 1
bibliography references (outside of the paragraph), and the title (the knowledge
question chosen by the students).

Is there solid justification for regarding knowledge highly in the natural sciences?

Knowledge in the natural sciences should be highly valued, as it allows humanity to develop and lead
the world to prosperity (perspective 1), and it also helps people to recognize the falsity of statements
(such as religious ones) (perspective 2).

The sciences of nature are at present the basis for the development of the productive forces. Applied
research in the field of chemistry, physics, biology, astronomy, geology and other natural disciplines
lays the foundation for the design of technical systems designed to facilitate the development of
nature. Regardless of what scientists invent or what this or that innovation leads them to, the world
is certainly moving towards scientific progress. And any progress brings only good. "It's not the gun
that kills, it's the man." is a quote from Samuel Colt. Science only reveals to people how things work
in this world and helps them to comprehend them, but it never tells them how to behave.

Almost at all times of mankind, people believed either in God, or in other worlds or magic. These are
the things whose existence could never be proved or disproved at that time in the development of
science, since these are the things that can be outside the field of view of science. Einstein spoke
about religion like this - "I do not believe in a personified God and never denied it, but expressed it
clearly. If there is something in me that can be called religious, then this is undoubtedly an boundless
admiration for the structure of the Universe to the extent that in which science reveals it." and said
"science without religion is lame, and religion without science is blind".

Thus, the knowledge and development of the natural sciences help people decide whether to believe
or not believe. Indeed, knowledge truly reveals the essence of this world, and without them, it is
impossible to imagine the work and processes in this world. In its essence, the development of
science can lead us to what we now call magic, and this gives humanity the answers to all their
questions.

Thus, science and its development is only beneficial and helps people answer almost all their
questions, but how they will use it is a completely different question.
