I think one thing that I'll start using now that I have read this article is looking
at the blank page every day. I have the tendency to get frustrated with myself
after I can't think of a solid topic of outline for my paper. From now on, I'll
spend a few minutes a day just writing something down until an idea comes to
mind.
One of my own writing tips, which was already in the article, is outlining. I had
an English teacher in middle school who taught me how to outline my papers,
not because it was a required assignment, but because it helped me organize
my thoughts to put together a decent paper. I always start writing with putting
as many words on paper that come to mind and then try to organize them in
order from topic to subtopic etc., Another thing that I try to start with is a
thesis. I always want to have my thesis before I start writing so that I stay on
track with the essay. When you're writing down as many words come to mind
on paper, you will also probably include things that are not relevant to the
topic. If you have your thesis right out in front of you while organizing, you
can filter out things that aren't related to your essays topic.

I loved how straight forward this article was. I think throughout my writing
career I have almost grown to hate outlines. In high school, it felt like a chore,
and I did not like many of the outline rubrics certain teachers made me follow.
Now that I have graduated and been given more freedom with my writing I
think I have strayed from writing outlines for my papers. I just felt like they
had left a bad taste they left in my mouth from previous experiences, but it is
definitely something I want to start implementing in my writing going forward.
One thing I really like doing when researching for informative papers is asking
the people around me what they think or how they view what I am presenting
to them. Obviously, an informative paper is not supposed to be biased, so
asking others questions and almost getting a feel for your audience can maybe
provide you with new perspectives on certain topics. Not only is that helpful I
believe it is so important when writing a non-bias informative paper.

Write an annotated bibliography for TWO sources being utilized in your paper. This
should be double-spaced and formatted in APA. Although some annotations may be
shorter than others due to the nature of the resource, I expect a summary, assessment
and reflection for each resource.
~~
An annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the
sources. Depending on your project or the assignment, your annotations may do one or
more of the following:
Summarize: Some annotations merely summarize the source. What are the main
arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered?
If someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say? The
length of your annotations will determine how detailed your summary is.
Assess: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful
source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the
information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this
source?
Reflect: Once you've summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it
fits into your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you
shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research project?
Has it changed how you think about your topic?

Sample Annotation
Ehrenreich, B. (2001). Nickel and dimed: On (not) getting by in America. Henry Holt and
Company.

In this book of nonfiction based on the journalist's experiential research, Ehrenreich

attempts to ascertain whether it is currently possible for an individual to live on a
minimum-wage in America. Taking jobs as a waitress, a maid in a cleaning service, and
a Wal-Mart sales employee, the author summarizes and reflects on her work, her
relationships with fellow workers, and her financial struggles in each situation.

An experienced journalist, Ehrenreich is aware of the limitations of her experiment and

the ethical implications of her experiential research tactics and reflects on these issues
in the text. The author is forthcoming about her methods and supplements her
experiences with scholarly research on her places of employment, the economy, and
the rising cost of living in America. Ehrenreich’s project is timely, descriptive, and well-
researched.
