Rock Mass Modulus

The rock mass modulus (Em) can be derived from the UCS tests, using the method suggested
in BS 8004, Appendix A, and is presented, as below:

Em= j x Mr x UCS
Em = j x Ei

where
j is related to the average discontinuity spacing ( j=Em/ Ei)
Ei is the (Young’s) Modulus of Elasticity of intact rock which is related to the uniaxial compressive
strength of intact rock
Ei
Mr is the modulus ratio related to RQD ( Mr= =75−600)
UCS
UCS is the unconfined compressive strength
