WEBINAR SERIES FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS AND HOUSE OFFICERS BY THE

HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP ALUMNI.

A. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY.

INTRODUCTION
In the last 5 years, there has been a steep rise in the number of Nigerian healthcare workers
who have left the country. Brain drain in the healthcare sector is not new. What makes this
period different is the sharp increase of medical students and medical officers who exit the
Nigerian system earlier. Unlike previously where people tend to work within the system, finish
residency or spend 3-5 years as a GP before exiting. Now, resident doctors abandon their
residency, and medical students and house officers are sitting for USMLE and PLAB.

The exit is due to the need to get better-paying jobs, live in countries with better quality of life,
higher standard of living and stronger purchasing power currency. The irony here is that, we
have more health challenges in the Nigeran healthcare system hence more opportunities. It is
unfortunate that medical training does not provide the skills to know how to spot opportunities
and utilize them, rather Doctors are trained to to earn salaries. They do not have the skill set
that enables them to face challenges and convert them into business opportunities. This absent
skill, has been detrimental to the commonwealth of the country and the people therein.

THE IDEA
The idea is to carry out a series of webinars across medical schools in Nigeria to enlighten and
inspire the medical students and house officers about how they can successfully achieve a
successful healthcare career in Nigeria.
In order to achieve the above, certain areas where medical education and orientation has been
lacking in Nigeria have been highlighted below;
1. Development of communication skills
2. Entrepreneurship head start (Micro MBA)
3. Personality discovery and emotional intelligence.
4. Masterclasses
5. Career Counselling.
These were selected based on observations gathered over the years and are tentative. The
definite topics for the webinar will be selected after surveys are carried out to gain data and
facts on the perception and knowledge level of the students.

STRATEGY FOR EACH UNIT.

The strategy here is to make them see the challenges, development, and opportunities in the
Nigerian healthcare sectors. How the right set of skills, knowledge, good work ethic and a
positive mindset can build successful healthcare in Nigeria.
FIRST SHOT.
The pilot series of webinars will be targeted to medical school within the circle of influence of the
alumni. We will compile the schools and carry out an online survey among the 400-600 level
students. Based on this survey and the tentative topics raised we can then formulate an
effective webinar complete with speakers and topics.

PARTNERSHIP.
We will be seeking partnerships as the need arise. The first set of partnerships will be geared
towards organizations or individuals that can help facilitate the webinars, case in point is the
Digital Health Entrepreneurs Network. Others will include financially and career successful
medical doctors.

PILOT SERIES
The pilot series will start with medical schools within our network. We will reach out to members
specifically for this purpose and begin by sending out the survey form with the aim of making
sure the overwhelming majority if not all of the students fill it. The data from the survey will be
analyzed and used for the webinars.

TIMELINE
Week 1: Selecting schools for pilot series and contacting the authorities.
Week 2 and 3: Sending out survey questions and analyzing them to pick topics and speakers.
Week 4: Sending invites to speakers and setting dates for the first set.
