Life in a Big City

God made the country

Man made the town
Surrounded by skyscrapers, residing in narrow streets, lost in the crowd, inhaling polluted air, living a
robotic life and living a mechanical life, but enjoying lots of dreamy comforts this is all about the city life. City
life is full of
Life in a big city has both good and bad aspects. Those who are used to it can’t even imagine living away
from this typical lifestyle whereas it’s not less than a nightmare for those living in rural areas.
A city dweller is likely to enjoy the provision of best health centres designed on modern and international
standards. In a city, medical hospitals, trauma centres and fitness clubs are equipped with modern machinery,
experienced doctors and para-medical staff. Even those living in slums have the facility of free medical dispensaries
run by charity centres. An easy and quick access to the hospital is a great blessing in a city.
What I like about cities is that everything is king size, the beauty and the ugliness.”
(Brodsky)
Cities are havens of knowledge. Educational and training centres having international infrastructure,
experienced faculty and quality education. A large number of students from villages have to migrate to cities for
good education opportunities. Some have to cover long distances on the daily basis whereas blessed are the city
dwellers who find quality education at their doorstep.
Travelling from one place to another is not annoying in a city. Smooth and well-carpeted roads and the
provision of quick means of transportation are a big relief to the city dwellers. The modern transit system in a city
like flyovers, ring roads, underpasses and subways has facilitated commuters a great deal. Even the public
transportation managed by local bodies is a big attraction for all.

Shopping is a popular activity in the cities. There are large numbers of shopping malls that serve the success
of this purpose. People from the villages come to the cities for shopping during any special occasion or festival.
The city offers better quality and numerous options for the same product. The concept of malls has managed to get
all types of customers with different requirements under one roof. For entertainment purposes also, there are plenty
of alternatives to choose from the amusement parks, restaurants, pubs, exhibitions, clubs and movie theaters. The
innocent villagers are often unaware of the types and names of the products that rule the cities.

“A great city is that which has the greatest men and women.”

(Whitman Walt)

City people hardly know their next-door neighbours. Social lives of most people in the city are restricted
to the virtual world of social networking sites. People hardly have any time for themselves in the city. Parties,
occasions and holidays are the only events where people get to meet their loved ones and relatives. The people in
a big city lead a restless and worried life. Modern civilization has made them insincere and selfish. They feel
isolated and insecure. On the flip side, people in villages, come in contact and hence talk to each other directly. No
one can remain a stranger in the villages due to constant communication and interaction with a small population.
“City life is millions of people being lonesome together.”
– (Henry David)
Noise, pollution and adulteration rule in a big city. The air in the city is extremely unhealthy due to air,
noise and water pollution. The people in the city do not get to see a clear sky or breathe fresh air often. Surrounded
by some noise almost all the time, you have to speak aloud to be heard. Also, the foods available in big cities are
unhealthy and adulterated. There is a clear difference in the quality of environment which people get to enjoy in
village life as compared to city life.
Life in a big city is a bit expensive. A city dweller has many things to spend on. In a city, priorities change
and luxuries turn into necessities. As a result of this, the cost of living is much higher than that of a village. Unlike
our villages, most of the entertainments in a big city are money-consuming. A city resident has lots of things to
spend on that a villager can even not imagine. Rental accommodation, utility bills, grocery rates, and shopping
Another drawback of city life is that it lacks serenity and calmness. Since a city is crowded with so many
people, noise echoes in its streets, bazars, parks and even hospitals. People migrate to cities for employment,
education and health amenities. Hence, a city life is likely to be full of noise and din.
From all the above points, we have concluded that life in cities and villages represents different and
contrasting pictures. City life is full of complex challenges with lots of amenities. Like a drug-addict, a city dweller
gets so used to it that in spite of knowing its drawbacks, he is not likely to get away from it.
A city dweller is like a crying baby with a delicious lollipop.
