Playing Area
 Basketball court - rectangular in shape, split in half by mid-court line
- 2 baskets one at each end of court
- Basketball rim 10 ft off the ground

Starting play

- Game begins with jump ball at center court, other players line up around the circle
- Once the ball is touched by players the game begins

Fundamentals
 Dribbling – bouncing the ball with one hand
 Passing and Catching – throwing the ball to teammates
 Shooting – putting the ball through the hoop
 Rebounding – gaining possession of the ball from missed shot
 Jumping – skill used in rebounding, shooting and blocking shots
 Defending – keep the opponent from scoring
 Moving without the ball- to get for a pass or shot, players must break away from defenders and
cut to openings on the court

Fouls
- penalties assessed by the referees
- each player is allowed 5 fouls before removed from the game
Examples:

 Blocking – personal foul when the defender makes illegal contact with an opponent
- when the defender impedes the progress of the opponent
 Charging (Player Control Foul) – personal foul when an offensive player makes contact
with a defender who has established a set position
 Elbowing – violation for swinging elbows excessively
 Flagrant Foul – personal/technical foul which is violent in nature. Ex: fighting, kicking.
 Hand Check – personal foul caused by defender making repeated contacts with hands on
opponent
 Holding – personal foul caused by illegal contact with an opponent which interferes with
his freedom of movement
 Intentional Foul - personal/technical foul which keeps the opponent from capitalizing on
an advantageous situation
- when a player causes excessive contact with an opponent
 Offensive Foul – caused by offensive player, in form of charging

 Personal Foul - illegal contact with an opponent while the ball is live
- Hinders the opponent’s defensive movement

 Technical Foul – non contact foul


- Intentional or flagrant foul while the ball is dead or violation to head coach
because of violations on the sideline or bench personnel

Violations
 Back-court violation – if player is the last one to touch the ball before it goes into
backcourt

 Closely Guarded (Five Second violation) – when ball handler in team’s front court is
guarded by any opponent who is within 6 ft of him while holding the ball
- Offensive player has 5 secs to get rid of the ball or drive past the defender

 Double Dribble – when dribble touches the ball with both hands at the same time
- when the dribbler picks up the ball and starts dribbling again

 Goal-tending – when player touches a shot ball while it is in downward flight


- when a defender touches a free throw attempt outside the basket

 Lane Violation – during free throw situation a player who enters the lane too soon
 Ten Seconds in the Back-court – has 10 seconds to advance the ball from their back-court
to the front-court
 Three Seconds in the Lane – offensive player cannot remain in free throw lane more the
3 seconds
 Travelling – caused by moving the feet without properly dribbling
