RETHINKING PEDAGOGY:
Challenges and Opportunities of Teaching English Language
in Hybrid Learning Modality

Research Design / Type of Study

This study applies a basic qualitative approach as it explores the opportunities and challenges
that English language teachers encounter in the possible implementation of the hybrid learning
modality in the Philippines. According to Plano Clark and Creswell (2015), this qualitative
approach is appropriate in analyzing qualitative/non-numerical data (such as words, images, or
text) from the target participants. Furthermore, to address the insufficiency of related literature
and study about English Language Teaching in a Hybrid Learning modality in the country, a
qualitative research study is needed to be able to investigate and provide in-depth
understanding of the variables. Qualitative research allows researchers to obtain richly
descriptive findings from data through themes and categories (Merriam & Grenier, 2019).  In
order to develop themes and scrutinize general conclusions from themes so as to provide a
general understanding of the research problem, this study also uses thematic analysis. As
stated by Kiger and Varpio (2020), Thematic Analysis is a method used in analyzing, describing,
and interpreting qualitative data collected from semi-structured interviews or Focus Group
Discussions. This type of study enables the researchers to generate common themes and
codes to gain more insights about English language teacher's lived-experience and perceptions
about the challenges and opportunities encountered in the implementation of Hybrid Learning
modality in the Philippines. Therefore, the basic qualitative approach and thematic analysis is
most suitable for this study as it aligns with the problem, purpose, and research questions.

Sampling Method
To be able to intentionally select sites and people that can best help to explore this study's
central phenomenon, the researchers utilized a purposeful sampling technique. Also known as
'subjective sampling', this type of non-probability sampling technique filters out irrelevant
information or responses as the researchers choose the participants (in this paper's case,
English language teachers) who are most appropriate for in-depth exploration of the central
phenomenon (which is the challenges and opportunities they perceive to experience in the
implementation of Hybrid Learning modality in the Philippines). The researchers believe that
English language teachers can give valuable information about the variables and the
implementation of Hybrid Learning in their educational institutions as well.
