PERFORMANCE NOTES and COMMENTS ON NOTATION
THE POEM is an integral part of the work and is to be spoken by the clarinetist as
indicated in the score. The poem also should be printed in the program. It is quite
acceptable to substitute a translation in the language of the country in which the work
may be performed, if such a translation exists or can be specially created. Otherwise,
the performer can choose between the original German or the English translation.
THE TRIANGLE can be suspended from the music stand or from a percussion stand
placed in easy reach of the clarinetist. Rests preceding and following the speaking or
percussion passages may be moderately extended as needed for the convenience of the
clarinetist.
(Optionally, the speaking and triangle passages may be performed by a second
person although it is preferable for the clarinetist to assume these roles.)
TIME SIGNATURES have been intentionally omitted in order not to obfuscate
the underlying straightforwardness of the music, which flows in quarter notes.
There is no objection if the performer wishes to mark the score with time
signatures,
MEASURES and bar lines are primarily for ease in reading and also show the long
phrases.
GRACE NOTES (Measure 12) are taken before the beat and are long and melodic,
almost to like 32nd notes from the preceding beat.
ACCIDENTALS apply only to the following note and are then immediately canceled,
in most cases indicated with courtesy naturals.
The composer would specially appreciate notification of readings or performances of
this work and would be deeply grateful for tapes or DATS.
