Let’s Find the Mass

Materials
Material A, B. C Measuring cup
Paper bags Digital scale

Procedure:
A. Hefting
1. Fill a cup with the first material, then place the cupful into a plastic bag and tie
the bag. Repeat for the other two materials until you have three bags.
2. Compare two bags at a time by hefting. To do this, choose two bags and hold
one in each hand. Then choose another two bags and compare.
3. Continue hefting pairs of bags until you have ordered all the bags from the
lightest to the heaviest and recorded the order.
Guide Questions:
1. What was the order of the materials from the lightest to the heaviest?
2. How do you know which was the heaviest or the lightest material?
3. Did any bags seem to be about the same mass when you hefted them? Which ones?
B. Estimate and Weigh
Pick up one of the objects/ bags.
1. Estimate how much in grams you think its mass is. Record your estimate.
2. Using the balance or scale, measure the mass of the object. Record the actual measurement.
3. Answer the questions.

Guide Questions:
1. Was there any difference in the order of materials when you hefted and when you
measured? Give details.
2. Each bag contained a cupful. Why did the masses differ if the materials all took up the same
space?
