Dia de La Diversidad Cultural
Dia de La Diversidad Cultural
Date established to promote reflection on interculturalism in Latin America and the recognition and respect for
the human rights of indigenous people.
October 12 was recognized until 2010 as Día de la Raza and commemorated the arrival of Christopher
Columbus to America and the union of the Old World with the New World.
However, in 2010 the name was changed to Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity, giving the date a
commensurate meaning with the value attached by our National Constitution and by different human rights
treaties and declarations to the ethnic and cultural diversity of people.
Today, this date invites all agencies, institutions and the entire population to reflect constantly on the history of
our countries and to maintain an open dialogue between the different cultures, all with the aim of generating
States where democratic means prevail for the resolution of conflicts that may arise between the different
cultures that inhabit the same territory, with different customs and institutions.
It should be noted that the Constitution enshrines the right to equality in articles 16 and 75, paragraph 23; while
article 75, paragraph 17, recognizes the ethnic and cultural pre-existence of the indigenous people of
Argentina, ensuring respect for their identity and the right to bilingual and intercultural education, and article
75, paragraph 22, accords constitutional status to the international human rights instruments listed before ,
which in turn enshrine on more than one occasion the principle of equality and non-discrimination.
