Psychological Perspective ( The theory of Hierarchy of Needs )

B. Maslow`s hierarchy of needs is a theory of motivation. That is divided into five

categories of needs which are physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging

needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. Maslow also states that as an

individual we need to satisfy our lower level needs before we satisfy our higher set of

needs. This theory also points us to have a greater balance of our needs between many

priorities we encountered.

C. In my real-life situation, I can identify my needs based on Maslow’s theory. My

physiological needs are I have shelter, clothes, air to breathe, food, and water. Safety

needs I live in a very secure environment and also I have my family who always protects

me. Love and belonging needs I love my family and friends and I believe they love me. I

don’t have many friends, but I am grateful to have them. In fact, without my friends and

family, I feel like I’m empty. Esteem needs I am comfortable with who I am and I believe

I have the respect of my friends and family. Lastly, self-actualization needs I enjoy

having a meaningful friendship. I realize the function of Maslow’s hierarchy needs is to

help us to understand our goals, plans, and experience in our life. We can also apply this

theory in our school, home, or workplace to determine how this theory motivates us

and to make sure that our needs are met.
