POST - OPERATIONAL CHEMICAL CLEANING OF BOILER PROCEDURE MEJIA THERMAL POWER STATION, DVC Unit 1,210 MW The following chemical cleaning procedure for Mejia unit 1,210 MW is based on the water wall tube deposit analysis conducted during May,2016 (Lab report No: 10 dated 04.05.2016). The recent laboratory trials are made under ideal conditions. ‘The same cannot be ensured during field performance. All efforts are made in optimizing the solvent package and cleaning conditions to remove the deposit The chemical cleaning procedure includes the following major steps. 1, ALKALINE COPPER REMOVAL 2. ACID PICKLING 3. NEUTRALISATION AND PASSIVATION. 1. Requirements The erection of temporary piping’s, valves, fittings circulation tank should be completed. Chemical circulation pumps with capacity of 700 T/Hir with standby has to be made ready to ensure velocity of at least 0.5 fps through waterwall. Heating arrangement by external heating to raise the solvent temperature 10 65/90 deg C during the cleaning process should be made available. ‘The drum internals should be removed. Orifice plates should be installed for all the down comers. The superheaters should be isolated after filling SH as per step 2 by plugging the connecting tubes to the superheaters. 2._SUPERHEATER FILLING Back flush the S.H. with treated D M water Back fill the superheaters with treated water containing 200 ppm hydrazine and ammonia to pH 10, Plug the superheater connecting tubes inside the drum. Raise the pressure to 4 to 5 kg/sq.cm (g) and isolate the superheater. Suspend one water wall tube sample coupon inside the drum and one in the mixing tank to ascertain efficiency of cleaning and passivation. 3._ COLD WATER RINS! Fill the system with DM water and establish circulation by pumps. Circulate for about 30 minutes and drain 4. HOT WATER RINSE Fill the system with DM water and establish circulation by pumps. Raise the temperature to 55-60°C by steam heating and drain after circulation for about 30 minutes. 5. ALKALINE COPPER REMOVAL CHEMICALS REQUIRED ‘CONCENTRATION Quantity @ Ammonium carbonate 0.25% (wiv) 600 kg Gi) Potassium Bromate 1.0% (wiv) 2300 kg Gil) Ciirie acid 1.0% (wi) 2300 kg (iv) Lig. Ammonia to be added to raise pH9.0 1095 ~ 4000 lit. Mix Ammonium carbonate , citric acid and ammonia in the chemical mixing tank. Thoroughly mix the solution by running chemical injection pump by recirculation. After ensuring the alkaline pH of more than 9.0 add potassium bromate and continue mixing by recirculation. CAUTION: Potassium bromate should not be added to solvent with acidic PH.) Fill the boiler system with DM water with steam heating and chemical injection and establish circulation with the circulation pumps. Continue the process for a minimum period of 8 hours keeping the temperature of the solution about 55-60°C. The duration will be decided on copper pick up by testing hourly analysis of copper in the solvent. Drain the system. 6. DM WATER RINSE: Fill the system with DM water with steam heating (about 50 °C) and establish circulation for 30 minutes. Collect the samples and analyze for pH. Drain the system. Ensure complete draining. The DM water rinse step is repeated till the pH less than 7.5. (Note: The total number of DM. water rinses may be two or three). 7. ACID PICKLING CHEMICALS REQUIRED CONCENTRATION QUANTITY (i) Hydrochloricacid (31%w/w). 5.0% (ww) 37 tonnes (i) Acid Inhibitor 03% (vi) 700 litres (ii) Ammonium bifluoride 0.25% (wiv) 600 kg (iv) Thio urea 1.5 % (wiv) 3500 kg Fill the bi pumps. Admit steam into mixing tank and raise the temperature of circulation water to about 60°C in return line. Cut-off steam and add a small quantity of hydrochloric acid and immediately followed by the required quantity inhibitor. Keep the pumps running for thorough mixing. Add required quantity of hydrochloric acid and thio urea in controlled manner so that acid concentration as measured in the sample from pump discharge does not exceed 6.0%. Acid concentration is to be analysed at frequent intervals while the acid is being added. Add calculated quantity of Ammonium bi fluoride into mixing tank slowly in a phased manner, within one hour. Analyse the samples from inlet and return line for acid concentration, copper and iron. The circulation will be terminated once steady readings of iron and copper are obtained in both inlet and return lines or after six hours (max.) of circulation, Drain the system under nitrogen blanketing. 9. DM WATER RINSE: Fill the system with DM water and establish circulation. Raise the temperature of water to 50 Deg.C by injecting steam and circulating for 30 minutes, Drain the system under N2 capping. 10. CITRIC ACID RINSE: Fill the system with DM water and establish circulation, Raise the temperature of water to 50 55 deg.C and add 0.2% (w/v) citrie acid, ‘Add liquor ammonia to raise the pH of the solution to 3.5 to 4.0 Circulate for 2 hours. Collect samples every hour and analyse for pH and iron content. Drain the system under nitrogen blanketing, vr system with DM water and establish circulation with the circulation 11. FIRST DM WATER RINSE Fill the system with DM water. Circulate the water. Raise the temperature to 50°C and circulate for 30 minutes and drain the system under nitrogen blanketing, Collect samples of inlet and retum and analyse for iron. 12. SECOND DM WATER RINSE: Fill the system with DM water. Circulate the water for 30 minutes, raising the temperature to 50°C and drain the system under nitrogen blanketing. Collect samples of inlet and return and analyse for iron. 13. NEUTRALISATION: Fill the system with demineralized water and circulate. Charge neutralizing chemical of 0.5% soda ash. ‘The water temperature is raised to about 80-85 Deg.C by steam addition and circulate for 6 hours. ‘The inlet and return samples are to be collected and analyzed for pH. Drain the system, 14. PASSIVATION STAGE -I Fill the system with DM water and establish circulation, Initially, add hydrazine to get a hydrazine concentration of 400 ppm and add ammonia to raise pH to 10. Raise the temperature to 80-90°C by steam addition and circulate for 20 hours. Samples should be tested for hydrazine concentration and pH periodically. Replenish hydrazine through dissolving tank when the concentration goes below 200 ppm. Drain the system hot. Open vent and drum man-holes to allow the entire surface to get aerated. 17. EFFLUENT TREATMENT: The effluents generated after acid pickling stage and citric acid rinse stage will be treated with caustic soda flakes and lime to a pH level of 5.5 to 8.0 before discharging. The effluent after Ist stage passivation will be treated with bleaching powder. Effluent Neutralizing pit: A separate pit with non-corrosive lining having adequate holding capacity depending on space availability, convenient layout and further discharging and pumping capacity of the pump to be used has to be made available with not less than 400 m’ holding capacity. 18. INSPECTION: Open the drum man-hole and the drum surface will be inspected for smooth uniform coating of magnetite, Inspect the sample coupons placed in the drum and dissolving tank for effectiveness of cleaning. 4.
