Part 1 (3 items x 5 points)

1. Recall the details about the kernel components of a Windows operating system (OS). Based on the
figure below, select three (3) kernel components that you think are the most significant in terms of
process control.
2. Give one (1) sample process that can be executed by each kernel component you have selected.
Explain each sample process relative to its corresponding process control structure. Perform additional
research if necessary.
Answers:
1. 3 Kernel Components
- Power Manager
- Virtual Memory
- Configuration Manager
2.
Power Manger
- Is responsible for managing the power usage of the system. It separates the power being
given to the system. When sleep, hibernation, or shutdown is required, the power manager
requests the appropriate power action by sending an IRP request to each leaf node in the
device tree.
Virtual Memory
- Uses both hardware and software to enable a computer to compensate for physical memory
storage, temporarily transferring data from RAM to disk storage. Virtual memory is what lets
Configuration Manager
- Is a process of maintaining systems, such as computer hardware and software, in a desired
state. Basically it keeps the computer running good and maintaining it.
Part 2 (60 points)
Select a computing device or a gadget (i.e., smartphone, tablet, and laptop) that you currently have
access to. Then, answer the following items:

b. 4gb RAM
c. 3.83gb
d.
- Google Chrome/ 268.9mb - Windows explorer/ 37.2mb
- Ms Word/ 33.1mb
- Task Manager/ 27.6mb
- Spotify/ 31.6mb

- Core sync (32 bit)/2.3mb
- Com Surrogate/1.5mb
- Creative cloud/5.4mb
- Creative cloud desktop/5.5mb
f. Application process, because of the much higher consume of memory its taking is much more of
the sum of background process plus not all of the background apps are not even consuming
memory
g. Bluetooth, hotspot, and input usb connector. I can connect my phone to this device via
Bluetooth but it will only act as a file transfer and it’s slow. Hotspot is just internet connection
shared from my phone to my laptop, lastly usb connector another kind of file transfer but faster
and more convenient, the downside is it’s a cord.
h. Yes, because it finds a new device entering this device creating a process of data transfer.
i. A possible effect is it would stop running all of it in an instance and stop accessing catch files
therefore making the pc run faster because there would be running on background nor
applications.
j. It limits the actions I take preventing me from downloading anything from the net, using usb
stick, accessing file share, scanning all email attachments and preventing me from unrecognized
executable from being run.
k. First by task manager and pressing end task, next by using cmd then type tasklist into the
prompt then press enter then type taskkill/PID or IM and the application you want to close.
