Module A2 - Scope of TCPS 2

Summary
Research involving human participants, as defined in the TCPS 2, requires review and approval by a REB.
Research is defined as an undertaking intended to extend knowledge through a disciplined inquiry and/or
systematic investigation
Human participants are those individuals whose data, biological materials, or responses to interventions,
stimuli or questions by the researcher, are relevant to answering the research question(s).
The TCPS 2 definition of human participant includes human biological materials from living and deceased
individuals.
Certain categories of research involving human participants are exempt from REB review.
Activities that use techniques or methods similar to those used in research, but do not have a research
purpose do not require REB review because they do not fall within the TCPS 2 definition of research.
