Volumetric Analysis-1

Aim: To find molarity and strength of given KMnO4 solution using standard Mohr’s
salt solution .

Theory :

Mohr’s salt is ferrous ammonium sulphate , FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O

Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizing agent in the presence of H2SO4.

KMnO4 oxidises Fe2+ in Mohr’s salt into Fe3+.

KMnO4 get reduced to Mn2+

Reaction between KMnO4 and Mohr’s salt is a redox reaction

MnO4- + 8H+ + 5Fe2+ - 5Fe3+ + Mn2+ + 4H2O

KMnO4 acts as a self indicator

The end point of titration is appearance of light pink colour.

To prepare 100ml of standard Mohr’s salt solution:

-------------------------------------------------------------

Weight of salt + Weighing bottle =

Weight of bottle =

Mass of Mohr’s salt taken = ----- g

Mass of Mohr’s salt x 1000

Molarity of Mohr’s salt solution = ---------------------
392 x 100

= -------- mol/L

Volume of Mohr’s salt taken = 20ml

Observation table

Volume of KMnO4 solution = ---- ml

MKMnO4 x VKMnO4 2
-------------------- = ----
MMohr’s salt X VMohr’s salt. 10

Molarity of KMnO4 = ------ mol/L

Strength of KMnO4 = Molarity x molar mass = ----- x 158 g/L

=

Result:

Molarity of KMnO4 = ------ mol/L

Strength of KMnO4 = ------ g/L
