Fixing the cruise control on Mondeo MK4.

This is my proposed solution for the broken cruise control on Mondeo MK4.

I managed to find a spare module which is located behind the steering wheel and to identify the
component that is likely responsible for the failure of cruise control. All the buttons are getting the
ground from one single component through common thread and this component is able to do this by
altering the resistance and sometimes interrupt. This part is a SMD fuse. It breaks on heat and then
restores. Thus, the error is not caused by poor soldering but this component. In a quick test I have
showed it to my soldering iron and immediately it broke, therefore, I have excluded the possibility that
something else is causing this error on the cruise control.

The good part is that the suspected part is relatively easily accessible by just removing the windscreen
wiper lever. Here is a picture with removed wiper lever.

And finally, this is a picture of a bare PCB:

The circled part is the SMD fuse. This part has to be replaced with a 10-15 ohm 1206 resistor.

Accessing the broken part (fuse):

To remove the wiper switch you need to remove the upper and lower steering column cover.

The top just snaps off, the lower is held by two screws.

The wiper switch is also secured with two screws, and then it has to be pulled to the side (it starts hard)

By turning the steering wheel 90 degrees to the right we have the best access to the opening slot.

I cut a small piece of double-sided adhesive and glued it to the bottom of the resistor. (Yes, I wrote 10 to
15 Ohms, but I only had a 0 ohm resistor)

Position the resistor on the top of the fuse with tweezers. The double-sided adhesive will keep the
resistor in place for the duration of the soldering.

Then I have soldered the two ends. You need a long narrow tip to avoid touching the surrounding
plastic.

It can be done but don’t let this be your first soldering job.
