poetWhy the accurate diagnosis of
Fungal Infection is important?
3.2 million Pakistanis living with serious infections includ-
ing keratitis, which can cause blindness, and the life-threat-
ening Candida auris infection. Laboratory diagnosis of
Fungal infections remains challenging and virtually forgot-
ten area in Pakistan and lack of routine diagnostic testing for
fungal diseases exacerbates the problem of antimicrobial
drug empiricism, both antibiotic and antifungal - thanks to
recent advancement in Fungal Diagnostic capabilities that
allowed an increasing number of Fungal infections to be ac-
curately diagnosed and treated with appropriate Antifungal
drugs and support stewardship programs and control AMR.
1-Fungal Smear/ Microscopy
Fungal infection is caused by fungi or microorganisms like
yeast or mold, If the fungal infection is superficial, then a
simple Microscopic examination is helpful to identify the
infection causing organism, and the root cause of the fungal
infection.

Most fungal infections occur on the skin, mouth, or genitals.
Some infections can be more serious and occur inside the
body, such as inthe lungs or the blood. The most direct and

5-Aspergillus Galactomannan
Aspergillus spp. are filamentous fungi found worldwide and
‘an live both indoors and outdoors. Invasive aspergillosis (/A)
is caused by breathing in these fungal spores. [Ais one of the
most significant threats to recipient of hematopoietic stem
cell, solid organ transplants and individuals with suppressed
immune systems. There has been a significant rise in the inc
dence of IA in the last two decades due to the widespread
Use of treatments, such as chemotherapy and immunosup-
pressive agents. Hence, an early diagnosis and initiation of
therapy strongly influence outcome.

Reporting: 6-24 Hours
6-Glucan Detection
Most pathogenic fungi have 1,3-B-D-Glucan in their cell
walls and minute, but detectable quantities are released into
the circulation during infection. Detection of elevated levels
of 1,3:8-D-Glucan is useful for the early diagnosis of fungal
fections and to support decisions to withhold or withdraw
antifungals. Hence, there is significant utility 1,3--D-Glucan
test in patients at risk such as; ICU/MICU/NICU, Mechanical
Ventilation, Stem Cell and Organ Transplants, HIV, Cancer
Treatment, Diabetes, Central Venous Catheters, Hemodialy-
, Gastrointestinal Surgery and Total Parenteral Nutri
