About the Centre of Maritime Law & Research
Centre for Maritime Law & Research is established with the joint efforts of
Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai and Directorate General of
Shipping in 2018 for the purpose of advancement in Maritime Academics
and Research. The Centre works towards contributing to all the stake
holders of maritime community including Ship Owners, Ship builders,
Charter Parties, Seafarers, Maritime Trade Unions by academic and research
support. The objective of the Centre is to enhance the development of
Maritime Law by promoting learning and research in the field by offering
various training and research programmes.
The Programme is designed for training the law faculties and enthusiasts in
teaching and researching maritime law. Indian ocean is quite significant for
trade and security and thus, has a very promising future in this field. The
emphasis on Blue Economy and 'Security and Growth for All in the Region'
(SAGAR) by the Government of India has made it very important to
prepare law faculties for teaching and researching on the subject. Maritime
law is mostly taught as an elective course in the Universities. There are very
less institutions that specifically teaches this subject as a degree course. One
of the reason is the dearth of faculties and researchers who specialises in
maritime law. With this goal, the Centre is organising One Day Capacity
Building Programme on Teaching and Researching Maritime Law for the
law faculties and enthusiasts to build and enhance their capacity in teaching
and researching maritime law. The resource person will be practitioners and
experts in the field of the maritime law.
