BASIC COMPUTER CONCEPT

Computer- is automatic, high speed, digital, electronic data processing device that can be programed
to accept data (input), process it into useful information (output), and store it away ( in a secondary
device) for safekeeping or later use.

Data Processing- is a process of transforming data into useful and meaningful information. Data is a
collection of facts relating ro events that take place. These facts could be in the form of numbers,
letters, special symbols or combination of these. Information refers to data that has been organized and
process so that it become meaningful.

DATA PROCESSING CYCLE

. Organization- the initial capture of data on some forms or documents, which referred to as sourcr
documents
. Input- the accurate recording of data and making them ready for processing in a convenient from; it
involves the following operations:editing, coding, verefying
. Processing- refers to the actual conversation of data into useful and meaningful information by
performing operatios on input data: may involved one or more of the following questions: classifying,
sorting, calculating, summarizing
. Output- the process of generating the information by collecting the results of the previous processing
steps and providing it to the user; it may be done in several ways; reproducing communication, sorting,
retrivieng

Manual-Mechanical Devices – devices powered by hand and requires physical effort from the user.

.Abacus- the first man-made device that uses beads: developed in China

.Napier’s Bones- an arrangement of bones wherein numbers are printed; developed by Jhon Napier

.Oughtred’s Slide Rule-consists of movable bars wit a precise scale which uses approximations for
solving problems; invented by William Oughtred

.Pascaline- the first mechanical calculating machine capable of performing simple addition and
substraction by dialing a series of wheels; invented by Blaise Pascal

. Leibnitz Calculator- the improved Pascaline capable of performing the four basic operations and can
extract square root of a number, invented by Gottfried Leibnitz

.Babbage’s Analytical/ Difference Engines- these engines embodied most of the design of the modern
computers. The Different Engine was design to automate standard procedure in calculating the roots of
polynomials while the Analytical Engine wa designed to perform complex matheatical calculations;
invented by Charles Babbage.
