Better Together is a six-level program in which book 1 is a bridge level for false beginners. Each book is
divided into six areas related to skills and systems. Skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Systems:
Grammar, and Vocabulary. Every section contains at least 16 lessons; each lesson can be covered in 50 to 70 minutes.
Every book of the Better Together series covers 100 hours of instruction.
Better together is connected and correlated to the Common European Framework of Reference, and as a
result It takes students to level B2 at the end of the six-level program. Book 1 covers level A1; Book 2 covers level A2;
Book 3 covers level A2+; Book 4 covers level B1; Book 5 covers level B1+; Book 6 covers level B2. The six-level
program allows the connection with the target language in at least 600 hours.
Better Together is connected to teachers who base their teaching philosophy on Constructivism, an approach
to the foreign language classroom specifically designed to help students learn the language in a more meaningful way.
Better Together is designed on students-centered class, focused on the making of interaction with English into
effective, natural, visual, emotional, and real scenarios for students, despite the fact that they do not live in an
English-speaking country.
The design of each lesson is connected to the world’s most honored credential for teaching ESL or EFL
(TESL/TEFL), the ICELT course. As has been mentioned before, Better Together series contain lessons related to two
types of English lessons: (1) Language-based lessons, and (2) Skills lessons. Language-based lessons can have three
basic structures. There are the stages of each subtype given below.
Speaking lesson
• Lead-in and set context for speaking
• MODEL introduction
• Content preparation
Ss generate ideas (e.g. listen to a model, identify macro features of the model)
• Language preparation (e.g. functions, vocabulary, grammatical structures from model , normally
“speaking sub skills”)
• Speaking task
• Content feedback
• Language feedback
Writing lesson
• Lead-in and set context for writing
• Reading (to provide a model of text type - focus on macro structure of the model through e.g. a
Reading for gist task)
• Language preparation (e.g. layout, vocabulary, fixed expressions from mode, normally through a
reading for detail or specific task)
• Content and language preparation
Ss generate ideas (e.g. brainstorm, note-taking)
• Writing
• Content feedback
• Language feedback
Let us analyze a typical receptive skills lesson since speaking and writing lessons are usually included in the
stages of this type of lesson. As in case of language-based lessons, a receptive skills lesson starts with a short
lead-in phase. Then ELT should ‘orientate’ students to the text that is going to be read or heard. Orientation to text is
also a short stage whose aim is to get students acquainted with the topic of the text – it can be demonstrated by
pictures, discussing the setting or characters and so on. Within pre-teach, vocabulary stage ELT introduces
vocabulary items needed for the listening/reading tasks. These would be vocabulary items that could be easily identified
as beyond students’ level, but necessary to understand the passage. Difficult vocabulary items that are not relevant to
understanding the main point of the passage, or are not related to key information should be ignored. Gist task applies
to reading and listening stages in receptive skills lessons and text-based presentation only. It is where the learners
listen or read for general understanding, without getting bogged down in details. A gist task should be low-demand and
not focused on a specific area of the text. A detail task stage is set before the listening to / reading the same passage
a second time and then students are asked to listen for more specific, but relevant information. In the end, there is a
follow-up activity stage with some feedback, and usually involves the students speaking or writing about the topic of
the text.
