ABSTRACT
At the moment, part-time student employment is viewed as a source of
concern. Students who work part-time have some benefits, but they also have
some disadvantages, which is one of the things that affect HUBT students'
learning. This study's focus is on the consequences of part-time employment
among HUBT students. The survey on the supplied form received a flood of
replies from the pupils, totaling around 100. Take into account the 100
responses and evaluate the benefits and drawbacks. At the same time, give
convincing proof that the average academic performance of students over the
previous year, the duration of part-time employment, and the kinds of jobs
held by HUBT participants have all been examined to determine whether
there is a relationship between part-time employment and academic
performance. The study's conclusions point to certain advantageous
characteristics, including students' increased independence, decreased reliance
on family, and support for their personal development. Additionally, it suffers
when kids put forth more effort while ignoring their academics, which leads
to poor grades. Contrary to those students who do not work a part-time job,
many HUBT students are able to combine their studies and complete their
degrees on time.

PART A: INTRODUCTION
1. Rationale for the study
In today's society, the issue of doing is always a hot issue, not only
interested by the press, agencies, and businesses but it has been deeply
ingrained in the minds of many students while still in school. Sitting at
school, constantly accumulating knowledge and experience to achieve lofty
goals in the future. Regarding behavioral capacity, students are an important
part of working age. They can have a lot of energy and wisdom. In terms of
goals, graduates are expected to have the knowledge to be able to work and
work after graduation. Currently, in general, most students are aware that
there are many different ways of learning and more and more students are
choosing hands-on learning methods. That's going to work part-time. Part-
time jobs are no longer separate jobs but have become a trend, associated with
the academic and daily life of students while sitting in the lecture hall.
Students go to work. In addition to income, they want to gain more
experience and learn more practically. And the reason that part-time work is
now becoming a trend is that for students, especially when living in today's
competitive society, social knowledge and practical knowledge have a great
influence on their thinking ability as well as their work after graduation.
Budget (1987, p. 304) said that "Many of the students work second, part-time
employment. And why is it vital to have a part-time job?".With the desire to
delve deeper into this issue, we have chosen the resource issue “Effects of
part-time jobs on the academic performances of HUBT students” as my
research paper.
2. Aims and objectives of the study
Examine how part-time employment affects the learning outcomes of HUBT
students. In order to help HUBT part-time students improve their academic
performance, solutions and recommendations are provided.

3. Research questions
This paper aims to answer the following questions:
1
- Definition of the part-time job?
- What are the reason why students work part-time while studying?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of part-time jobs?
- How do part-time jobs affect the academic performances of HUBT
students?
- What is the solution?
4. Scope of the study
I conduct title research for HUBT.

5. Design of the study

Part A: Introduction - introduces the rationale, purpose, object, scope,
and design of the study.
Part B: Development
1. Material collection – Based on some pre-existing materials such as
some websites/articles mentioning the reality of students' part-time jobs.
Besides, students at the Hanoi University of Business and Technology are
divided into two groups part-time employees and students who do not work
serve as the research subjects for this topic. Both male and female participants
must be between the ages of 18 and 22. The majority of the freshmen and
sophomores in the study are third-year students.
2. Data/Material analysis – indicates methods, research setting, data
collection instruments, and data analyses.
3. Result, remark – provides key information about effects of part-
time jobs on the academic performances of HUBT students.
Part C: Conclusion - summarizes the main points of the study, the
remaining limitations, and makes suggestions for the further research.

PART B: DEVELOPMENT

1. Data collection
This was based on certain pre-existing sources, such example websites or
publications that discuss the realities of students doing part-time employment.
The topic mostly depends on primary data acquired through a pre-designed
survey connected with questions issued via fan pages and student groups at
the fan pages of the Hanoi University of Business and Technology. 95 pupils,
or around 95% of the class, work part-time in this situation, with the
remaining 5% not working.

1.1. Definition of the part-time job?

For the most part, it is up to your employer to define what part-time
means. The Department of Labor (DOL) Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
does not contain any rules or guidelines that state how many hours a part-time
(or full-time) job is.

Many employers have used the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)

definition of part-time work: anyone working less than 35 hours a week.
However, 35 hours a week is something the BLS picked for statistical
reasons, nothing more.

But the Affordable Care Act (ACA) does define part-time work as
anyone working less than an average of 30 hours per week. Anything above
that and your employer is required to provide you with health insurance.

1.2. What are the reasons why students work part-time while
studying?
Students are considered a healthy workforce, regardless of knowledge
or good health should be able to enter any suitable profession. Currently, a lot
of students are looking for part-time jobs for many different reasons.

3
1.2.1. Information about the state of student part-time employment
today
Vietnamese employees currently make up a sizable portion of the
population between the ages of 18 and 23, particularly students enrolled in
schools and universities around the nation. Outside of school hours, many
people opt to work part-time jobs to expand their horizons, develop their
talents, and supplement their income.

As can be seen, there are many different types of part-time work

available today, including paid product work, domestic help, and part-time
work. You can choose the job that best meets your needs because the
recruitment process varies depending on the job.

Students who work a part-time job have a steady monthly income that
enables them to pay for living expenses, education, and other requirements.
This is the main cause of the sharp rise in enrollment demand. As a result, the
student job market is lively and competitive. The majority of part-time
students will focus on major cities including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da
Nang, and Can Tho...

1.2.2. The variety of part-time jobs currently available to students

It is not difficult for students to find a part-time job for themselves after
every school hour. With the keyword "part-time job for students", within just
0.73 seconds, google gave about 247,000 related results (illustration image
below). As we can see, part-time jobs are diverse. Extremely diverse students

1.2.3. The reasons for HUBT students' part-time employment

According to a survey of 95 HUBT students, the reasons for working

part-time are mainly the following reasons:

- They have to take care of accommodation, tuition, and many other

miscellaneous expenses.

- Many families have difficult circumstances, and students cannot rely on

family support.

- Earn more money, be it to gain experience or to build relationships...

2. Data analysis
2.1. Employment of part-time employment in terms of genders and
qualifications
2.1.1. Gender of the HUBT percentage
100 HUBT students made up the sample for the survey. The
percentage of students who are currently employed part-time was 80%, while
5
the percentage of students who are not now employed part-time was 20% of
the total.

2.1.2. Part-Time Employment Rate of HUBT Students

This shows that the vast majority of students today work part-time jobs
while continuing their studies. After-school part-time workers focused on the
study's freshmen, sophomores, and third-year students. The number of first-
year and fourth-year students is not insignificant because first-year students
are still unsure of themselves and focus mostly on their academics. In order to
spend more time on their studies and graduate on time, fourth-year students
are working on their graduation reports and finishing the subjects that are
assigned to them. University tests and coursework become considerably more
focused in the fourth year.

2.2. Areas for Part-Time Work

6
There are various options for part-time employment. According to a
survey of 100 HUBT students, HUBT students are more inclined to accept
any valid part-time job that pays well when it comes to part-time
employment. The majority of students who apply for jobs (29,3% of all
applicants) are seeking opportunities in the service industry, including
cashiers and servers (both male and female). My research and observations
indicate that there are many stores and restaurants close to HUBT. Many
HUBT students have applied for part-time work at two sizable cafes, a
wedding restaurant, and a wedding venue that is all located right across the
street from the school. The remaining 24.4% of the total is made up of
marketing, leaflet delivery, and even subsequent advertising. Sales in stores,
online, and on other social media platforms make for a fairly high percentage
(14.6%). Additionally, HUBT students select careers like tutoring (13.2%),
consulting, call center customer service professionals (11.6%), technology
driver or shipper (6.9%), etc., if they feel the position is a good fit for their
skills.
2.3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of part-time jobs?
2.3.1. Advantages of part-time jobs?
- You acquire marketable talents: You can learn important skills from
work experience that a university or college degree won't teach you with a
part-time job. Working in a fast-paced atmosphere, for instance, will teach
you how to work independently or in a team, as well as how to use your
initiative and develop a keen attention to detail. These are all important skills
that you can use in a variety of jobs as well as in other facets of your life.
- You become more confident: Part-time work can help you break out of
your shell and boost your confidence if you're timid and introverted.
Additionally, since the majority of student jobs are in the customer-facing
industries of hospitality and retail, you'll be compelled to communicate with
many people you wouldn't typically. You'll become more socially adept as a
result of this.
7
- You expand your network of business contacts: Part-time employment
allows you the opportunity to network with individuals wherever you work.
Therefore, even if you are not working in a field that you are interested in,
you are still developing your professional network.
2.3.2. Disadvantages of part-time jobs?
- Working part-time will require scheduling time for both work and study,
but if students don't balance the two, neither job will produce effective
outcomes.
- For university students, it can be noted that there is a significant quantity
of material that has to be retained while doing the exercises; if you do not put
in the necessary time and effort, it will be challenging to finish successfully
and take up a lot of your time. more challenging each time.
- Additionally, not all students' part-time jobs provide them with
"experience" for future employment.
- The Langmaster International Education Organization hosted a seminar
with the title "Should students work part-time?," and T.S. Le Tham Duong
added, "Experience is not only the collision created by life, but right in the
school chair, students have learned a lot about the experience from teachers,
from internships, practical exercises, classroom activities, not to mention
activities organized by clubs and schools. To seek life experience, you are too
young.
3. Result, Remark
3.1. HUBT Student’s Latest Semester Results, Remark
The study found differences between students' academic outcomes prior
to and following part-time employment. When students work part-time, their
academic performance suffers compared to when they do not. The percentage
of successful learning outcomes is quite high (65.7%), whereas the average
learning outcomes were 33.3%, results that were below average were 1%, and
successful learning outcomes were practically nonexistent.

8
Biểu đồ 3.1

(Reference: Survey findings on the subject)

Because of this, most students who work part-time struggle

academically, with some still failing classes as a result of the time spent
working, the time divided between learning and studying, etc. Unreasonable
part-time occupations have had an impact on the analysis findings. There are
times when part-time employment conflicts with the schedules for work and
school. Each student will have a choice and be able to make plans in advance
to avoid dropping out or taking a part-time job when classes overlap. When
their school schedule and their part-time employment schedules coincide,
students frequently attend class and take a break from their jobs. This choice
demonstrates that students have placed a priority on their education, which is
currently the most essential thing to them. In addition, some students made
the decision to skip class and go to work without thinking about the
repercussions. Others might choose to take a vacation from employment and a

9
break from school at the same time. The two alternative options still make up
a sizeable fraction of the population, even though going to school and quitting
your job is the most common choice. This would have a significant effect on
the results of student learning. Along with the benefits and effects on
academic performance, part-time jobs have an impact on students’ mental
health and well-being. Up to 45.5% of students who work part-time report
feeling worn out and dejected afterward. Additionally, a small percentage of
students (33.3%) say they feel normal, whereas the majority (24.2%) say they
feel content and at ease. In actuality, students who work part-time while still
enrolled have an edge in the hiring process since they have earned experience
and are able to employ their talents right away. Additionally, 61% think that
having a part-time job will be detrimental to kids' learning performance, while
39% disagree. This illustrates that there are numerous divergent opinions
regarding students who work part-time employment. In addition to arguments
in favor of part-time employment and its benefits, there are also arguments
against it and its impact on students.
3.2. What is the solution?

Through the survey, the students said that when they work part-time, it
easily causes them to lose focus on their studies. Ali (2017) said that “Part
time job could bring extra income and help university students to gain
working experience. But students may feel sleepy and reduce the time from
the study, thus it is a real challenge to balance between part-time job and
study.”
Therefore, working students need to realize that the current problem of
part-time work is only temporary while studying is a long-term job and has a
great impact on the future.
In order to do that, you must have a firm stance "every hour, do
whatever". When you go to work, you should try to focus and complete the
work so that you no longer have any concerns about work when you come
home. When you leave work, you only have to think about studying. To
10
increase the attraction for you to pay more attention to your work, you should
share with your relatives and friends the difficulties at work and ask them to
help you by regularly reminding you to pay attention. Focus on learning, so
you will be motivated and conditioned to pay more attention to learning with
less opportunity for distraction. Need to schedule a private time each day for
studying. Therefore, the first thing to do is to put aside all the things that are
not related to the current lesson.
Put thoughts about work out of your head during study time, and don't let
worries dominate your concentration. When something distracts you, make an
effort to stop those thoughts and bring your attention back to the lesson as
quickly as possible. Focusing will help you solve the problems of the lesson
much faster. Concentration during class time: It is necessary to be highly
focused in order to listen to the lecture and grasp the lesson right in class. To
do so, it is necessary to have a sense of practice, to avoid being distracted.
Students should choose a position to sit at tables near the teacher who is
lecturing, both being able to hear more clearly, and having the ability to talk
less. Speaking of asking questions to the teacher is also a way to make us
more focused. To give a good speech, students should write down their
comments or statements on a piece of paper before speaking.

11
PART C: CONCLUSION
In summary, part-time employment by students is just a necessary short-
term and long-term strategy. Whether or whether it is managed, it is an
unstoppable tendency that will unavoidably develop. What benefits and
disadvantages do part-time jobs for students have? Without a doubt, the
solution exists. There is much to gain, but also a lot to lose. Consequently,
"Should students work part-time or not?" Should and should, in my opinion,
but supporting how students can both have income and be encouraged to find
occupations that support their studies and majors is a must-have institution.
The design used by the Ministry of Education and Training.
