Causes of accidents in laboratories
● not following safety and rules procedures inside the lab
● not following proper instruction
● Inappropriate handing techniques
●Uncontrolled access to chemical storage
● Lack of chemicap –related training
● Lack of supersivion
CHEMISTRY LABORATORY SAFETY
 Always wear
approved eye
goggles, lab shoes
and lab gowns in
the laboratory.
Confine long
hair and loose
clothing.
Do not attempt any
unauthorized
experiments.
No horseplay in the
laboratory. Never engage in
any play, trouble or other
acts of mischief
in the laboratory.
Never eat or drink in the laboratory. Do not
bring water bottles into the lab.
• Keep your work area clean
and uncluttered. Clean up
your area before leaving the
lab.
Throughly wash your
hands any time you leave
the laboratory.
Immediately report all
accidents, no matter how
minor to your laboratory
instructor.
Do not leave the
laboratory without the
instructor's approval.
Procedures in handling

spills
PREPARATION

 Correct handling
● Read labels carefully.
●Use fume hood as directed
●Never mix chemicals for the “fun of it”. You might produce dangerous
and possibly
explosive substances.
●Keep all lids closed when a chemical is not being used.
●Never touch, taste, smell chemicals without proper instruction by the lab
instructor.
●Keep chemicals and apparatus away from the edges of laboratory
tables.
 PREPARATION

 Laboratory should be stocked with spill kit

●Spill kit-a kit that contains appropriate equipments
and reagents for cleaning up chemical spills.

Communication

 Remain calm and ensure that all laboratory personnel are moved
away from the area where the chemical spill occurred
 Even if it’s a minor chemical spill that poses no threat, the
laboratory personnel must be alerted or informed
