‘An-lun Huang, op.41(1987)
Cappriccio for Clarinet solo and Strings was dedicated to the leading Canadian
Clarinetist, Jim Campbell, who commissioned the piece through the Ontario Art Council,
in 1987. The music was successfully premiered by Jim and the Orford Quartet in the
Parrysound, Ont. the summer of the same year. In 1989, the Thirteen Strings of Ottawa
made an other success of this music for its version of string orchestra. This version of
string orchestra won the Ist prize, a gold plate, of the National Competition of “the Best
Composition of the Year” in China in 1991. Since that, this piece has been performed
frequently in China. Jim's own performance, accompanied by The Russian
Philharmonic Orchestra of Moscow, has been recorded by “ROI”, a Hong Kong based
CD company, in 1996. [ROI has release more than 50 Cds of Chinese Traditional
Music. This CD of Jim Campbell is one of the three CD sets on the symphonic works
by An-loon Hung. ROI is going to release up to 200 CDs on contemporary Chinese
music.]
The music is divide in two sessions. Th¢ Ist slow session is written in a romantic,
dreamy mood. The long melodic line is built on a quit traditional tonal harmonic system,
The 2nd session is based a Chinese folk tune. The composer used an unique Chinese
“HAOZI” style. “Haozi” is a kind of work song sung to synchronize movements, with
one person leading. In this effective music, clarinet leads the orchestra to a virtuoso
climax with some very strong rhythmic patterns.
