Chapter 1
Introduction
A tree native to the Philippines called Antipolo belongs to the Moraceae family
(Sunset Cove Beach, 2019). Antipolo is a huge tree that may reach a height of 30 meters
and is found all across the Philippines in forests and thickets at low and medium altitudes
(Garcia, n.d). Sap, a substance generated by plants (most often trees), is similar to tree
resin, although the two substances are distinct. Resin is typically thicker and stickier than
sap, which is typically liquid and sweet. Resin is used as a sealant, rosin for string
instrument bows, and even in soaps. In emergency scenarios, it can also be used for
outdoor survival (SuperBee, 2022). Resins are by-products of plants that are typically
produced by woody plants, are not soluble in water, harden when exposed to air, and do
not participate in the basic functions of the plant ( Forest Service Shield, n.d).
Plaster is a moist or sticky substance used to coat someone or something (Oxford
Learner’s Dictionaries, n.d). It also works for pipe holes, but these cases are often
neglected by people thinking it’s just a waste of money.
A pipe is a tubular piece, or hollow cylinder, used to allow substances to flow,
such as liquid and gas. The first pipes are thought to have been constructed out of baked
clay and straw. Later, a developed copper pipe is created (The History of Plumbing,
2021). But as time goes on, there will inevitably be leaks as a result of the hole in it. It
could harm your entire house if you ignore it. It can harm your home in a variety of ways,
including floods, invasive black mold, warped and discolored walls, and poor water
quality. High water pressure, temperature variations, foundation shifting, tree roots, and
corrosion are the main causes of the hole. To stop pipes from leaking, all of these must be
under control (BEST Plumbing, 2016).
The mold and mildew that grow as a result of leaks are typically the most
hazardous. It can lead to a number of respiratory issues that are dangerous for both you
and your property. Because it prefers to flourish in areas with plenty of moisture
(Heinselmen, 2019). Bathrooms are where mold commonly thrives, although it can also
be found behind walls and under sinks. Leaky pipe mold poses a risk to one's health and
needs to be dealt right away. The more you disregard it, the greater it will harm you and
cost you extra money( BEST Plumbing, 2016).
Therefore, this study aims to produce a composite pipe plaster by utilizing a
mixture of Antipolo tree resin and cornstarch.
Statement Of The Problem
Pipes have made our lives much easier in the way that they allow substances to
flow. Especially water. If it was not invented, people must have still gone into the river to
fetch water. But over the years, pipes had been having holes and its been a problem to
people because it cause respiratory issues due to the mold and mildew. Utilizing Antipolo
tree resin and cornstarch as a composite pipe plaster is the solution that the researchers
hypothesized. The outcome will be used to analyze the efficiency of Antipolo tree resin
and cornstarch as a composite pipe plaster.
Specifically, this study attempts to answer the following questions:
1. How can Antipolo tree resin composite pipe plaster can be described in terms of:
a. Texture
b. Odor
c. Color
2. What traits do Antipolo tree resin and cornstarch have to be effective as pipe plaster?
3. What is the effect of Antipolo tree resin composite pipe plaster on the hole in a pipe?
4. What happens after a week of placing the Antipolo tree resin composite pipe plaster in
a pipe hole?
5. How can the excess of Antipolo tree resin composite pipe plaster be described after 10
days?
Ho: There is no significant difference between Antipolo tree resin composite pipe plaster
and commercially pipe plaster.
Ha: There is significant difference between Antipolo tree resin composite pipe plaster and
commercially pipe plaster
Purpose of the study
The goal of this research focuses on the utilization and fabrication of Antipolo
tree resin and cornstarch as a composite pipe plaster. And seeks to determine its efficacy
as a composite pipe plaster
