Industrial Safety Standards
• There are thousands of local, regional and national standards that
apply to Fire and Gas detection system.
• Ranging from basic electrical standards under functional safety
specific standards set by the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC).
• Application independent.
• IEC 61508 for functional safety.
• Application specific

• IEC 61511 for process industry (same as ISA S84.01 in the US)
• EN 50156: electrical equipment for furnaces and ancillary
equipment
• Country specific (EU and US)
• EN 54 series: components of automatic fire detection
• NFPA 72: national fire alarm code
• NFPA 85: boiler and combustion systems hazards code
• Basic, environmental and EMC safety
• IEC 61131‐2: basic and environmental
• IEC 61000‐6‐2: EMC 6
Safety‐Related Application acc. to IEC61508
Following are examples of SIL application:
• Emergency Shut‐Down systems (ESD)
• Fire and Gas Systems (FGS)

Typical Examples for SIL‐Levels

A typical gas detection devices (system) with ATEX‐Certificate including the functional approval according to IEC61779 with regular maintenance is
SIL‐1 equivalent to SIL‐1.

The step from SIL‐1 t SIL‐2 will typically be reached by self testing facilities for hardware components. Also reduced maintenance intervals for the
SIL‐2 sensors may be required. For software it is a tremendous amount of documentation and requirements to comply during development.

The main requirement is that a failure shall not cause an unsafe state (fail‐safe system). The step from SIL‐2 to SIL‐3 will typically be reached by
redundancy.
SIL‐3
If nearly all possible failures are detected, a simplex unit is also able to reach SIL‐3. For software the amount of documentation and requirements
to comply during the development will also increase.

Required redundancy (something triple or more) and excessive self testing and comparison between redundant lines, software involvement is
SIL‐4 typically low.
