SUBJECT- VERB AGREEMENT

SUBJECT - the person, place, thing, or


idea that is performing the action.
-can be anoun or pronoun
-comes before the verb.
-Answerable with the questions:
who and what
Example:
1. Brian sleeps every afternoon.
2. Steven appears busy.
3. We are watching Netflix.
4. They always play Basketball.
5. I am thirsty.
6. Mike, Mhey and Jake love soda.
VERB -the action words in a sentence
that describe what the subject is doing.
-almost always come after a noun or
pronoun.
Example:
1. Brian sleeps every afternoon.
2. Steven plays basketball.
3. Timyco is happy.
4. Jordin was excited yesterday.
5. Hazel,Vein and Jenevie are having
lunch.
6. The girls were happy.
7. Julia cooked a delicious meal.
8. Teacher Maine taught English subject
during her time as teacher III.

AGREEMENT RULES
Singular subject will have singular form of the
verb(BY ADDING “S”)
plural subjects will have the plural form of the
verb(BY THE ORIGINAL FORM OF THE VERB.)
SINGULAR(1 subject) PLURAL(2 or more subjects)

RULE 1. The subject and verb must
agree in number.
Singular subject will have singular form of the verb.
plural subjects will have the plural form of the verb.
Example:
1. The dog barks loudly.
= subject is dog (which is singular).
2. The dogs bark loudly.
= subject is dogs (which is plural).
3. Mark eats his dinner.
= subject is dog (which is singular).
4. They write quickly.
= subject is dogs (which is plural).
RULE 2. When a phrase comes between the
subject and the verb, remember ignore that
phrase and the verb still agrees with the
subject.
1. The dog, who is chewing on my jeans, barks
loudly.
= subject is dog (which is singular).
2. The mothers who are in the park walk slowly.
= subject is mothers (which is plural).
RULE 3. If there are two subjects connected
with the word “OR”, you use the verb form of
the subject that is closest to the verb.verb still
agrees with the subject.
1. Either Trialee or Yohan plays for the team.
= subject is Yohan (which is singular).
2. Either Aethan or the other kids know the answer.
= subject is kids (which is plural).
3. Rice, Potatoes or tomato goes well with grilled chicken.
= subject is tomato (which is singular).
