1 Introduction
In the networking world, we use addresses for configuration and to identify
machines and many other things. There are many types of ip addresses. the
topic that we will discuss today about is multicast addresses.
So what are multicast addresses and what they are used for?

2 What are multicast addresses

Multicast Addresses are a specific type of IP address, they are used for Multicast
Groups. There are different multicast address groups used in networking.
In this article, we will focus on the multicast addresses that are related to CCNA
200-301 exam topic.

2.1 IPv4 multicast address

IPv4 Multicast Addresses are the D Class IPv4 addresses between 224.0.1.0 and
224.0.0.255.
the addresses in this group are given below:

224.0.0.0 Base address (reserved).

224.0.0.1 All hosts on the same network segment.

224.0.0.2 Routers on the same network segment.

224.0.0.5 All OSPF Routers .

224.0.0.6 All OSPF Designated Routers (DR)

224.0.0.9 All (RIP) version 2 routers .

 224.0.0.10 All (EIGRP) routers.

224.0.0.12 DHCP Server/Relay Agent.

224.0.0.18 Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) .

224.0.0.251 Multicast DNS (mDNS) address .

224.0.1.1 Network Time Protocol multicast address .

2.2 IPv6 multicast address

IPv6 Multicast Addresses are given bellow:

ff02::1 All nodes on the local network segment.

ff02::2 All routers on the local network segment.

ff02::5 OSPFv3 All SPF routers.

ff02::6 OSPFv3 All DR routers.

ff02::9 RIP routers.

ff02::a EIGRP routers.

ff02::12 Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) version 3.

ff02::1:2 All DHCPv6 servers and relay agents .

ff05::1:3 All DHCPv6 servers on the local network site.

ff0x::fb Multicast DNS.

ff0x::101 Network Time Protocol.

3 Conclusion
Multicast Addresses are the addresses that are used to reach a Group of ad-
dresses by one shot .they are so practical and handy.
In this article we took a closer look at the multicast addresses that are mostly
used when we are preparing for our CCNA exam.
