Brexit
Since the beginning of 2013, Brexit has been a hot topic in the media. Even today weekly reports
about the post-Brexit situation are still being published. On
January 23, 2016, the British citizens decided in a referendum with a very close vote to withdraw
the United Kingdom from the European Union. This was certainly connected with the strong
Nationalism in Britain and the proudness for the country, after all, the motto of the movement
was “takin back control!”. Thus, new trade and migration laws were introduced to the state as
especially the “freedom of movement” was very controversial and drastically criticized by may
British nationals. Of course this was a very big challenge, as it was the first member of the
European Institution to resign. After much back and forth negotiation, even a deadlock, a
negotiated divorce deal was finally reached on 31 January 2020.
