For more than a century phosphorus was made through this method, for example to produce an early

version of matches, until in the 18th century a couple of Swedish chemists discovered that calcium
phosphate could be sourced from bones, which became an early fertilizer. This and other discoveries
eventually led to the development of commercial fertilizers, by far the largest global use for phosphorus,
and enabled the Green Revolution and a massive global population boom.
