Agriculture has predominantly been the major contributor to the Indian economy,

employing the largest proportion of the workforce and contributing about 35% to India’s
GDP. Despite India receiving global recognition for its manufacturing and service sector,
agriculture and related business plays an important role in the growth of Indian economy.
Agriculture and Agribusiness is the largest business in our country and is growing rapidly.
The importance of Agriculture and Agribusiness is underscored by its contribution to Indian
economy, the huge employment opportunities it presents, strategic for food security and
tackling inflation, and providing raw materials for other industries.
India has failed to continue the growth momentum which was generated during the Green
Revolution. There is a pressing need to focus on Agriculture and develop Agribusiness.
Agriculture output in India is hampered by small and fragmented land holdings, uncertainty
of monsoon and lack of irrigation facilities, poor quality seeds and fertilizers, lack of
mechanization and technology, and inefficient supply chain and logistics facilities.

The extent of food shortages, mass social unrest, spiralling inflation and burgeoning imports
pose a great threat to the economy. However, with some changes, Agribusinesses could
become a strong growth engine for the Indian economy. Through the adoption of new and
emerging business models in almost each element of the agribusiness sector, robust
partnerships across the value chain as well as use of modern technologies, the output from
agribusinesses can be increased rapidly. Agribusinesses represents a unique business
opportunity and should become a priority focus area over the next decade.
