Dulce et Decorum Est
1.Forms & Patterns/Structure-There are four stanzas of
different lengths,one stanza consisting of just two
lines.The disorder of the poem mirrors the disorder of
the battlefield.Owen uses a regular alternating rhyme
scheme.
2.Does the poem have a rhyme scheme?
Yes,the poem does have a rhyme scheme.It is located at
the end of each line in the stanzas.Owen uses a regular
alternating rhyme scheme.
3.Who is speaking?(Monologue or Dialogue)
The speaker is a soldier,traumatized by the experience he
had in the war.
4.Who are they speaking to?
They are speaking to the soldiers on the battlefield.
5.What is the message the poet wants to get across?
6.The subject matter of the poem-The poem is about the
brutal struggles of soldiers in a company,the death of
one of the soldiers and the trauma it left behind.
7.How does the poem effect my emotion?
The poem makes me feel really sad because one of the
soldiers died while fighting in the battlefield.
8.Title of the poem-The title of the poem is Dulce et
Decorum Est.
9.Mood & Tone-The mood of the speaker is of
compassion and panic as the gas bomb falls.Then of fury
as the speaker realizes that those in positions of
authority have condoned this waste of life and also
deceitfully tried to romanticize it.
