DUE DATE: 30 OCTOBER 2022

EXAMINER: Penti Paulus

MODERATOR: Mrs Kehinde Awodele

Instructions to candidate:

Question 1 [15]
The bus-bar protection scheme of Figure Q1 uses high-impedance voltage relays for the detection
of fault currents. For faults at ‘A’ and ‘B’,

Fig Q1
(i) Draw the equivalent current transformer circuits and calculate the relay voltage in each
case (Assume CT to be completely saturated). (9)
(ii) Comment on your results in terms of the settings and the safety of the protection
equipment (assume NO CT saturation). (6)

Question 2 [30]

In the system of Figure Q2, given the power rating and voltage ratio of the power transformer and
the CT ratios:

Figure Q2

(i) Determine the transformation ratios and the connections of the compensation
transformers required in order to set the differential relays, which are not provided with
taps. (20)
(ii) Produce the complete three-phase connection schematic and identify the currents in
each of the elements. (10)
