MM & ORR

Date: December 15,2021

Topic: Chemical Energetics.

Title: Enthalpy of Solution (Heat of solution).

Aim: To determine the enthalpy of solution for 3 substances.

Apparatus and materials:

 Balance

 Styrofoam cup

 Thermometer

 measuring cylinder

 Beakers

 glass rod

 ammonium chloride

 potassium nitrate

 sodium hydroxide.

Method:

1) Use a measuring cylinder to measure 100 cm3 of water.

2) Pour the water into a Styrofoam cup and allow it to reach a steady temperature by

allowing it to stand for 5 minutes.

3) Use a balance to weigh 5.0 g of ammonium chloride.

4) Use a thermometer to measure the initial temperature of the water and record it in a

table.
5) Pour the ammonium chloride crystals into the Styrofoam cup and use a thermometer to

stir and dissolve the compound. Take care not to break the thermometer.

6) Record the highest or lowest temperature attained as the solid dissolves.

7) Repeat steps 1-6 for potassium nitrate and sodium hydroxide respectively.

Observation:

Table of results with appropriate title.

Substance Mass of substance Initial Final

used/ g temperature temperature ▲T/◦C

NH4CL 5.0 26 23

KNO3 5.0 26 23

NaOH

Calculations:

Calculate the enthalpy of solution ∆Hs for each compound and state whether each dissolving

process was endothermic or exothermic.
