ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: 58 . 62 - 62 INTRODUCTION Although polychaetes are a major group of benthic marine organisms (Day, 1967, 1973; Taylor, 1971; O’Gower and Wacascy, 1967) of great ecological importance, they have not been as extensively studied as certain other major froups, such as mollusks and decapod crusta- ceans. Importance of polychaetes as food items of benthic fishes and decapod crustaceans has been noted in many studies (Hedgpeth, 1954; Smith, 1954; Darnell, 1958; Randall,” 1967; ‘Tagatz, 1968; Topp and Hoff, 1972; Cobb et al., 1973; and Camp, 1973). McNulty (1966, 1968) and Taylor (1971) discussed the relationship of polychaetes to sewage pollution, and Reish (1955, 1966) discussed use of a polychaete species as a pollution indicator. Some species exert enormous destructive effect on coral reefs (Hartman, 1954; Marsden, 1962; Robertson, 1963; Ebbs, 1966). In’ studies based on Thorson’s (1957) concept of stable bottom communities, polychaetes may be used to moni- tor effects of nuclear power plants, industrial pollution, dredging and filling, and other man- induced environmental changes, To obtain knowledge of the marine biota of the eastern shelf of the Gulf of Mexico, the Florida Department of Natural Resources Marine Research Laboratory conducted a major collecting effort, Project Hourglass, from August 1965, to November 1967 (Joyce and Williams, 1967). This project. produced 728 benthic samples with dredges and trawls at ten estab- lished stations off Tampa Bay and Sanibel Island, Florida, to maximum depths of 73 m, resulting in a large, important collection of marine life, of which polychaetes were a major part. Additionally, polychaete material from several other major sampling programs is present at the Marine Research Laboratory. A literature search, conducted to develop necessary back- ground information for study of this material, resulted in a catalog of polychaete species names from 297 taxonomic, ecological, and_other references pertinent to the fauna of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, Major lists for polychaetes from Gulf and Caribbean localities include those of Horst (1922), Monro [1933 (165)), Hartman (1951), and Rioja (1959). ‘These are primarily taxo- nomic works and do not include references to many ecological and biological studies herein included. Important bibliographies dealing with polychaetes are found in many of the cited references. Some more important taxonomic works included are those of Schmarda (1861), Ehlers (1887), Augener (1906 to 1936), ‘Treadwell (1901 to 1943), Monro (1928 to 1939), Rioja (1945 to 1961), Hartman (1938 to 1969), Pettibone (1954 to’ 1971), and Jones (1961 'to 1963). There are essentially no zoogeo- graphic papers on polychaetes from the study area, but pertinent information is contained in many of the papers cited. The reader is referred to Hedgpeth (1953) for a discussion of zoo- geography of the Gulf of Mexico and to Topp and Hoff (1972) for a more recent summary. Specific geographic areas included in th study are the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea (West Indies), Bahama Islands, eastern Central America, tropical South America from Columbia to northern Brazil, and the east coast of Florida. We have attempted to include all polychaete records from these areas. Day (1973) has recent: ly summarized information of polychaetes in the Carolinas, Predictably, larger and/or more common species have been reported more often, and smaller andjor more cryptic species less fre- quently. Many, especially the smaller species, probably remain undescribed. For example, the Laboratory has collections of the usually small Acrocitridae from the east coast of Florida and from the Gulf of Mexico. There are only a few records of this family for eastern North America; they involve two species, both of which are poorly known. The genus Iphitime (iphitimidae), whose species are commensal with certain crabs, has not been reported in the study area, but representatives are contained in our collections. No comprehensive collections of polychaetes have been reported on from the Carolinean areas of the Gulf of Mexico or from the east coast of Florida; such treatments, when conducted, will undoubtedly reveal new records and new species. It is also probable that new species or records of polychaetes will be found in large collections from offshore waters at almost’ any location in the study area. The reader unfamiliar with the Polychaeta is therefore cautioned against regarding this as a total faunal compendium. ‘The paper is divided into a bibliography and an annotated checklist. Certain biblio- graphic citations were not seen by us, and information indicated from them was extracted from other publications, particularly Hartman (1959, 1965). Specific names in the checklist are grouped in phylogenic order by family, generally following the checklist of Hartman (1959, 1965), and thereafter in alphabetical order by genus and species. Specific names are listed as cited in the original references, except for oceasional deletion of subgeneric names, mis- spellings, and certain noted variant spellings. Numbers after each specific name in the check- list indicate the bibliographic citation in which that name is recorded from the study area. We have attempted to include information concer- ing status of each name in the checklist. This does not reflect personal determination on our part, but is based on literature information. Authorities are included by author, date, and bibliographic citation number. Disputed taxo- nomic problems are not resolved in this paper. Certain papers in the bibliography, cited in the introduction or in the checklist to update taxonomic status, do not deal directly with Gulf or Caribbean polychaetes and are unnumbered. The following are explanations of some examples found in the checklist: PHYLLODOCIDAE Lepadorhynchus erythrophyllus Schmarda, 1861 10, 102, 221. [=Phyliddoce (Anaitides) erythrophylla, fide Augener, 1925 (10); =Anaitides, fide Hartman, '1959 (102); =Phyllodoce (Anaitides) erythrophylla, fide Pettibone, 1963 (192). The above states that L. erythrophyllus Schmarda, 1861, was changed to Phyllodoce (Anaitides) erythropliylla by Augener (1925), who reexamined the holotype (see reference number 10 in the bibliography). Hartman (1959), in bibliographic reference number 102, elevated the subgenus to generic rank, but Pettibone (1963), in bibliographic reference number 192, retained Phyllodoce. ‘The numbers 10, 102, and 221 refer to bibliographic citations in which this name is used to report the species from the study area, Further references to this species can be found in the checklist under Anaitides erythrophyllus and Phyllodoce ery- throphylla. An entire familial listing must be consulied to obtain all information pertinent to a particular species name. For example, Phyllodoce oculata Ehlers, 1887, was referted to erythrophylla by Augener in '1925(10), and Hartman [1959(102)] questionably referred Phyllodoce tortugae Treadwell, 1917, to this species. This information is contained’in treat- ments of the latter names. FLORIDA MARINE RESEARCH PUBLICATIONS NEREIDAE Neanthes (often considered as a subgenus in Nereis) caudata (delle Chiaje, 1822) 103, 177, 205, 215, 232. [-Homonym “Nereis (Neanthes) arenaceodentata, fide Pettibone, 1963 (192); =N. (N.) acuminata, fide Day, 1973.) Numbers refer again to bibliographic cita- tions in which this species was reported under this name from the study area. The name of delle Chiaje was determined to be a homonym, by Pettibone [1963 (192)], who resurrected a younger synonym, and also included the species in the genus Nereis. Day (1973), a reference with no bibliographic citation number because it does not specifically report on polychaetes from the study area, changed the species name to a synonym preceding that used by Pettibone. This paper presents the results of our literature search. We hope it will facilitate study of polychaetes in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, BIBLIOGRAPHY Cross Reference ‘Numbers 1 ABILDGAARD, P. C. 1789.
