Activity 5–   current issues in Philippine education to review the K to 12 curriculum

to suite the norms and values of the Filipino learners..

“REVIEW K TO 12 CURRICULUM”
The Department of Education (DepEd) welcomes the plan of the House of
Representatives to review the effectiveness of the K to 12 Basic Education Program.

In a statement on Sunday, October 20, House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said
that the Lower House is in consensus that the K to 12 Program has to be reviewed to
allow DepEd to provide the status of the policies and programs, and identify its
achievements and challenges since its implementation in S.Y. 2012-2013.

Congress and DepEd have worked closely together since the previous budget
hearings to address the issues of the K to 12 Program. A dedicated review session
will provide an appropriate venue to comprehensively discuss concerns about the
Program and plot out corresponding solutions.

With an additional P650 million in the proposed 2020 budget specifically for the

improvement of the 12-year basic education program, DepEd commits to coordinate
and collaborate with the members of the Congress in strategizing effective
implementation of the Program in adherence to Republic Act No. 10533 or the
Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 for the benefit of the learners.

Likewise, DepEd hopes the outcome of the review will spur renewed commitment
and initiatives among lawmakers, advocates, and other stakeholders in aid of
realizing the K to 12 program’s overall goal – hone holistically developed Filipino
learners with 21st century skills.

The Department of Education (DepEd) uttered that K-12 "is the most comprehensive
basic education reform initiative ever done in the country since the establishment of
a public education system." However, the implementation of the new curriculum has
raised several challenges which rooted on the appreciation of the nature of the new
curriculum, the additional costs to every family, and the readiness of facilities,
infrastructures, instructional materials, and teaching personnel [4] - [6]. Such
concerns were undeniable, and the government needs to examine the
implementation of K-12 up to the classroom level to lessen curriculum mismatch. ...
... The narratives of the teachers and students clearly showed the lack of materials
and resources after several years of curriculum implementation. These accounts
have verified the challenges that teachers and students are facing, which conforms
to [4] - [6]. Similarly, their answers implied that there still existing in them a lot of
misconceptions about the K-12 curriculum. .
The curriculum is an essential aspect of the academe and Filipino learners are
adjusting to the academic arena to suit the K-12 curriculum's current layout since its
conception in 2013. The K-12 curriculum is the consequence of the education
sector's three-year mediation by Philippine policy implementers and was subjected to
tedious and complex processes before it was implemented (Cabili & Capilitan, 2015).
However, the transition from the Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) to K-12
Curriculum in the education system in the Philippines drew negative reactions from
different groups of society. ...
